BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

How long ago was the Airband trial? It might be worth talking to them to see if they admit to having issues and explain how they might have resolved them now. Otherwise it's going to be cellular which might also not be an option if you're very rural, or a satellite service for £££.

@SixTwoSix How about 4G/5G then in that area?

4g is spotty, most of the time I visited I had no Internet at all, same with my wife and we were on alternate networks.

They actually had 2 trials over the years, last was back in 2020 time as they were assured previous issues were fixed, they eventually got a full refund of months used.

Her partner still lives there since she passed but he's happy enough with a slow connection as all he uses Internet for is email and browsing.

It's just a textbook example of forgotten pockets of countryside where the options aren't great.

Interesting Zen Internet update, where I was having speed inconsistencies with them these mostly seems resolved now as of a few weeks ago. The daily tests on my UDM SE are consistent now every day.

I know they have been doing a lot of work on the backend but let’s see if this continues.

Wonder if anyone can let me know their thoughts on this.

Looks like FTTP has just happened on my street and as someone on a 24MB connection I am keen to go for it. Only problemm is I expect we will be looking to move house at some point. So I'm not keen to jump on a 24 month contract and also I not a fan of the price increases every April.

I have been looking at Aquiss as they offer 12 month contracts. I know the house buying process is going to take 6 - 9 months once we have even found somewhere so I'm happy to accept the cost of paying off any remainer of the contract.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions?

Just got an email from OR saying that my house has been added to the build plans for FTTP. Huzzah!

Though it's vague, I assume it means i'll get FTTP in a few years lol.

Yeah, accept that buying yourself out of contract is going to be a tiny percentage of the costs involved in buying a house and just consider it a cost of moving. Presumably any house you move to will have FTTP if that's a requirement you have, I don't know any ISP that won't let you move your service when you move house. Even if FTTP isn't available you can see out your contract term with FTTC.

Also worth checking the contract cancellation terms, I cancelled my BT contract at least 6 months early when I got Hyperoptic installed and the cost to end it was pretty reasonable.

Also worth considering cashback deals with a new provider can often negate some/all of the early termination charges with your current provider.

In my case, the £90 I got from TCB for moving to Vodafone last year covered the early termination fees from BT, alongside actually paying less per month for remaining months I would have been on BT left me with more in pocket.

For Plusnet FTTP its around £12 per month early cancellation

Possibly a more unusual question/request but would anyone be decent enough to take a picture of the internal BT Fibre socket and post it?

I'm trying to work out how much room it'll take up and positioning for an installation at the end of the month.

I'm aware externally it's the gray box fitted to the wall, which then has a cable running from it into the property.

Inside, is it just the one socket?

Cheers & thanks in advance.

Thanks again, just trying to get an idea in order to reuse the current hole coming in from VM.

Guess I'll get them to fit the ONT just above that.
