BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Exactly that - it's an addiction of mine

"But if I spent 2 hours looking for deals, I might save 2%!!!!"

Guilty as charged, though my risk assessment brain would probably say worst case £28 is only going up a little.

I got 900/120 for £41 but it's going to like £47, and then next year probably back into the £50's in April. Is what it is, fwiw the BT service I've had is rock solid.

I was going to see if the website would offer me any tempting "upgrade" deals on the crossover into April, but so far, not the case.

I had the option of Toob at 900/900 for £25 but that's on CGNat and it's new, so I didn't want to risk unknown ISP with potential teething issues, will re-visit on next contract renewal.

BT have been good to me to be fair, very solid, but the router is terrible for IoT devices. I've never gotten my Key Light Air to work with it. Works with other routers but just not the BT one.

It might be the same issue my Inverter had, can't talk to the network when 5Ghz is enabled.

In the end I persuaded BT to send me a 2nd router and I made one my 2.4Ghz SSID, and the other a different 5Ghz SSID :)

It happened since they originally broke Sonos and WiFi speaker compatibility back in 2021 I think it was. Since then I've tried a few new routers but still no success.

Tempted to get myself a router on the basis that it frees me from terrible ISP routers.

I think I want to get a router and since WiFi access points, like you bored of becoming to set it all up and deal with ISP routers every year or two.

It's great, if I change ISP all I need to do is change my WAN configuration. Then either sell or throw the rubbish they send me in the bin.

You have to send them back these days or they bill you for it.
I can't remember the last time I had to send a router back, I only have one spare from Zen and they didn't ask for it when I they let me out of my contract for being clowns. But I'm not the kind of customer to go with the likes of TT, BT etc. Aquiss who I'm with don't even supply one, which is fine by me. I remember years ago having to pay PlusNet P&P for a router I didn't want or use, what a waste of resources.

Haha, you reminded me of UK Online. As an ISP they were actually OK. Static IPv4 subnet, decent support (office product), but their sales script was demented. They said I had to purchase their DG834G when I already owned one. I explained I already had one, but thank you anyway. No, they say, I have to buy their one, because it's the only model they support and it's a condition of signing up. Yes, I reply, I understand having standardised CPE for support purposes but I do in fact have that exact same model, still in warranty it's so new. Round and around we went, until eventually I realise it was just a sign up tax (£55 iirc). I paid it, put it straight on eBay and just grumbled to myself. It was a decent ISP though, so you win some you lose some!

Virgin Media still make you return kit. I was charged £50 for one of the SuperHubs and some bloke with a VM jacket came knocking on the door to collect it. I told him it was in the loft, and he said I had to give it back. Do I get my £50 back, I asked? No it's not your unit, we want it back. I asked him why, given VM's unit price for them at the time was around US$5 and they had charged me £50 for it, they didn't expect me to consider that I owned it in lieu of any signed rental agreement or otherwise a refund? One of their managers called me later that week, I went through the same spiel and they gave up in the end. It's still in the loft... They haven't charged me for any equipment since. :p

An interesting comment.

BT will ask for their routers back. When I upgraded from VDSL to FTTP they sent me a new router (which was exactly the same as the router they'd send me for VDSL) and wanted the VDSL router back. When Royal Mail lost the return BT told me they were going to charge me £65 or so but I gave them the tracking reference for the return that showed RM has lost it and BT marked it as having being returned.

Why is it interesting? I work from home and having a static IP address is extremely useful, to the point where I'd say it's essential. Having a /29 as an example is been more useful than I originally thought it would be. Not many ISPs offer static IP addresses unless on their business plans (with business prices) which I'm not willing to pay for. I don't need the increased SLA as if necessary I can use a 5G hotspot and jump box until any issue is fixed.
