BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I just called BT to cancel my 900/110 contract coming to an end in 28 days. Currently paying £56 due to go up by 14.4% in April.

Offered same service with Xbox ultimate game pass for 12 months all for £41 (starting after the price increase so will definitely not go up until April 24).

Service has been excellent so can't complain. I could have gone to Vodafone for £35/m but that would have involved digging up the drive again!

Why is that?
Vodafone are with City Fibre in my area not openreach. No telegraph pole to the house, ducts too old to pass a wire through, so BT had to lift bricks up the drive to install originally. I suspect would be the same for another fibre to the house.

I’m pretty sure if you spoke to them they can provision an OR line instead. With that said, CF may just use the existing ducting.

Why is it interesting? I work from home and having a static IP address is extremely useful, to the point where I'd say it's essential. Having a /29 as an example is been more useful than I originally thought it would be. Not many ISPs offer static IP addresses unless on their business plans (with business prices) which I'm not willing to pay for. I don't need the increased SLA as if necessary I can use a 5G hotspot and jump box until any issue is fixed.

I read your comment as you're not the sort of chap that'd use BT, TalkTalk and the like because they're BT or TalkTalk rather than because they don't dish out /29's or whatever your IPv4 requirement is. It's horses for courses though.

Many moons ago I had a /29 from Zen which was useful at the time, but these days a dynamic IPv4 address is fine. What's much more important to me then a /32 or /29 is native IPv6 which BT gives me. Not having to mess about with tunnels to get IPv6 connectivity is extremely handy.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but here goes.

This is the ONT box inside our home that has the BT fibre line or so im told. Can i connect my TPLink Deco M4 straight into this and run it as a Router without having to use the BT hub as a Modem inbetween them? What's the best way to connect it all up as i don't want more points of failure tbh hence why i just want to use the Deco M4 since i know it works and it works really well in my home in its optimal positions right now.

Edit: Thanks Mods

Just noticed this bad boy up on the poles at my parents place. Lucky them! Now I have the GPON CBT at my place and know what they are... I'm always looking at telegraph poles in the area :D.

The only real option they've had this past decade is Virgin Media as no VDSL, just ADSL @10Mb alternative. This new Community Fibre competition will be great come bargaining time.

Side note... Shot with phone with 15x digital zoom, from a 4x optical lens. I'm impressed with that clarity.

I'm not sure why Openreach are still bothering with battery backup for the ONT, the battery will require replacing and could be an issue in a few years time due to heat and swelling.

They're not, they haven't issued BBU's for years, I think they stopped in 2019.

You can specifically request one from BT if you're in an area with poor/no mobile coverage but you need to call them to request it. I assume other ISP's do the same.

Noticed that my Aquiss initial discount was still present after the 6 month period and I had been paying too little. Sent them an email, near immediate reply saying that their system hadn't updated properly, and not to worry about the amount owing due to my honesty. Happy with that!

Just had this email from Openreach (They have been around this area for months now, seemingly putting underground wires in place)

We’re getting in touch to update you on our Ultrafast Full Fibre build. We’ve reviewed our build plans, and currently we can’t deliver Full Fibre to [Address redacted]

There are lots of reasons for why our plans change - from engineering hazards to access permits. We review our build plans regularly as circumstances change. We hope this is just a temporary setback and that we can bring [address redacted] back into our Full Fibre build plans in the future.

We'll keep you updated and let you know immediately if anything changes.

Sweet! Will i need to set things up again on the Deco app or should it just pick it up and assign the same IP's so i don't have to reconfigure all my smart home devices, pc's etc?

You'll need to setup PPPoE authentication on the Deco. BT don't care what username and password you use as long as there is a username and password. Once that's done you should be up and running.

My BT upgrade offers now Fibre has been installed in my road are terrible. £71 for 500mb and £81 for 900MB. What should I be looking at paying for those from people already with them.
