BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I've gone with Plusnet for the full fibre. Have VDSL with them till July so just upgraded. Fingers crossed install gets completed tomorrow.

My VDSL connection was a good one last 8.5yrs...

Yeah I am not desperate for FTTP to the extent that I'd be looking at 5G options if it didn't get here soon, but that's because I get about 65Mbps on FTTC with 20Mbps up. If I was in the position of only having 5Mbps upload I think I'd be tearing my hair out or would have jumped to LTE a long time ago.

Just had this email from Openreach (They have been around this area for months now, seemingly putting underground wires in place)

Had the same email today :(
I was sure there was another thread where someone received this email then were able to order shortly after.

Only thing in my case is I’m in a block of flats so that might have caused some complication.

200 is personally the sweet spot for me, anything more is just nice to have.

How long does a 100GB CoD download take at that speed?

I’m way out of touch because a 100GB game download is an inconceivably large patch, is it downloading the entire game each time it updates?

Sorry, was referring to the full game.

100Gb at 200Mbps would take about 1 hour 15 mins or so. Assuming the full 200Mbps is used the entire time.

That’s not too bad actually, especially compared to 7+ hours on 70Mbps.

Nice improvement. What happened to the install?

Mate it just felt like a hurdle at every stage of install.

My install was supposed to start and be completed on the 24th March however they only completed the outside install.

Next Install then booked for 3rd April. Friendly chap. Installs ONT and splices cable. ONT light still RED, he says optical signal not strong enough. Checks CBT, has a strong signal there and he says possibly the connector wasn't on properly. Fair enough. He splices the cable again, not sure why.

ONT light now green, happy days. This is where it get Amateur. Plug router in and I had set it up all ready to go with PPPOE details so it should just work. It doesn't and he is adamant there is a TOGGLE in the router settings for full fibre instead of FTTC. I've never seen that and was sure it wasn't needed as it's just a LAN connection from ONT. He spends almost an hour trouble shooting and also can't can't comprehend that the ONT is a modem.

I ask him is there anymore he needs to do on his end to make sure the connection is OK. .. As in a call to Openreach to confirm signal, he says the green lights are on the ONT so it should just work.

I'm like okay then and disheartened. The old Plusnet email says it should be live by midnight so we leave it there and he leaves. I expected him to have it running before he leaves as all you guys on OCUK have done so... but I digress.

He then comes back 5 mins later as he says when he went to sign of the job one of the steps says it's RED, something to do with node IDs not correct. So he calls OR and gives them the code on the ONT and they say yes the address is wrong and he needs to rebuild the database, takes 5 mins. I am the first user on the CBT so it makes sense it needs a few extra steps of setup, something the engineer should have picked up on and checked. After that it's all working. I'm super happy now. 2.5hrs later. We shake hands and he leaves.

I'm then clearing up the dirt left from the drilling outside and make sure the outside box has been screwed shut. The box almost comes off in my hand! It was fine before he came. Held on with 2 screws but one of the raw plugs has now come loose. The engineer would have seen this but left it. I'll have a go at fixing it tomorrow.

I'm just happy it was up and running, but it almost felt like it wasn't going to happen.

“We’re getting in touch to update you on our Ultrafast Full Fibre build. We’ve reviewed our build plans, and currently we can’t deliver Full Fibre to xxxxxxxxx.”

:( how annoying!
