BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just to let you know my status with regards to FTTC:-

New cabinet appeared end of October 2011, the BT checker during last year stated availability would be 31st Dec 2011, then changed March 31st 2012, then recently changed to 30th June 2012. Very disappointed with this delay, however my exchange EMWILLO is now accepting orders & my mate who lives closer to the exchange than I do has been able to place his order & is due to be live on 30th March after his installation completes, so all is not lost.

Just annoyed that my gamble of switching to BT option 3 (so I get free upgrade to BT infinity) in November last year hasn't paid off as I'm still waiting for my cabinet to go live.

Can someone tell me that if the cabinet is in place & the new tarmac has been laid, all I'm waiting for is the power to be switched on, has that already been connected up & it literally is a flick of a switch inside the cabinet?

6 years of 2.3Meg connection will soon hopefully be 69.6Meg, if all goes according to plan.

My postcode is DE21 2SQ and Im assuming I'm connected to the cabinet that is about 400m away, but unsure if this is P44 or P51, from the Dec spreadsheet, as I really don't know where the other one is. No number is painted on the old cabinet next to the new one.

Alan.

Well totally out of the blue the checker now says I can order FTTC so the order is in, but seems odd that 3 days ago it stated it had been put back to June 2012.

The earliest date was 3rd April but due to other commitments I have to wait until 17th April.:(

I'll let you know how it goes after the install. A new 18month contract applies, even though I am only about 6months into my total broadband contract.

Happy days.:)

Alan.

DJMK4: Look at your local council's planning portal, they should have it online & you should be able to search.

I found having a approximate postcode for BT cabinet made searching my councill planning applications easier.

OK bit of a strange situation here, on the openreach site (
http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ ) it says "accepting orders" for my exchange, yet when I click through to BT infinity checker it says I can't get it.

Now to be fair I didn't know my exchange was going to be enabled (never seen it have a date set before for FTTC) and haven't seen any new cabs setup so not surprised I can't get it. That's why I find it strange that my exchange is supposedly accepting orders. Maybe some streets elsewhere in my town are getting it first, I guess.

Yes, exchange and cab's are very different, accepting orders just mean one exchange plus 1 of anything from dozens to thousands of cabs are done. I think my exchange was done 18 months ago or something, finally got enabled on my street a bit over a week ago.

Tad disappointed that pings aren't as good as with Be thanks to BT's rather daft network, looking around it seems to take longer to get out of BT's network than with Be, so more speed, but more steps to get anywhere :(

Still feels WAY faster loading websites and downloading stuff is awesome, its not painfully higher either, gone from 15-16 to around 25-28 or so on average.

I'm guessing you have interleaving on because it's not normally that high. I just did a ping to bbc.co.uk and my average is 11ms. There's not really anything you can do about it except that hope DLM kicks in and lowers the interleaving over time.

Guess I'll just have to sit and wait, currently on a 3.5-4mbit ADSL line which is half the speed of what I had over 6 years ago :)

Still, at least the exchange has been enabled so there is finally light at the end of the tunnel in this internet ghetto. Only around 3000 homes here and not all served by my exchange so hopefully they can get the cabs rolled out quickly.

In terms of latency looking at what others have reported it should be around 10-15ms for those living near london (extremities of the country obviously higher same as all connections). Currently I ping 12ms on ADSL Max so expecting something similar when I can finally lay my hands on FTTC.

Based on what?

Based on the fact they simply set them 3 months into the future and move it another 3 months every 3 months. It is fairly clear they never had any intention of meeting the original December 2011 date they first gave and it's simply a placeholder. You watch - 30th June it'll say 30th September.

I'd rather it just said 'Coming soon, no date' because it's more honest.

Ahhh i can't believe I've already been through my 18 months contract with BT already! I'm itching for something faster now :( I remember back when my connection used to be faster that 98% of tests according to speednet, same speed now nets me 93%. Still is more than enough but the upgrade bug has me bitten :(

80/20 with BT retail can't come quick enough... or if I've missed out, being able to order it. :)

How is BT Infinity changing?

Over the last two years, BT Infinity has changed the face of broadband in the UK by giving our customers speeds four times faster than the UK average. And more and more people can get it every day – we're on track to reach 10 million premises in 2012, and two thirds of the UK by the end of 2014.

BT is now investing even more in the network and we'll shortly be announcing even faster broadband speeds of up to 80 mbps through BT Infinity. The speed that you get will depend on the distance between your home and your cabinet, but our tests are indicating that many of our customers will see a very big difference!

We'll be announcing prices for the new speeds soon. If you want to be the first to hear from us please register below and we'll let you know as soon as we can – or watch this space for updates

What will these new speeds be ?

Your maximum possible speed will depend on the distance of your home from our nearest street cabinet. When 80 mbps goes live you'll be able to come back to BT.com and get a personalised speed quote. We expect the majority of customers to get an even faster speed. Register your e-mail address above to be the first to hear when your new personalised speed quote will be available on BT.com.

In the meantime, BT Infinity is already four-times faster than the UK average so if you haven't signed up yet check here to see if it's available in your area. You'll get the chance to upgrade to our new 80Mb product once we go live so no need to wait.

How and when can i get them?

We'll let you know over the coming weeks.

Are they for 'Brand New Customers' Only?

No! Existing customers will be able to upgrade their lines soon after launch.

"Upgrade" seems to imply additional cost

As soon as openreach released the figures it was pretty obvious it was going to cost to upgrade, that and talk talk upped the prices for 80/20 as well. Besides what does come free these days?

I guess you missed:

We'll be announcing prices for the new speeds soon.

Shock = 0.

Meanwhile, I'm very happy because Zen just doubled their allowances for free, not that I was anywhere near 500GB but now I have 1TB. Still waiting to hear their pricing for 80/20...

Any news on when Sky Fibre is going live yet? Registered my interest weeks ago but have heard nothing.

I heard its going live on April 10th not totally sure if correct , but would seem strange as thats when B.T 80/20 is surpose to be going live so Open Reach website states:)

I had it installed today, the router seems to be the limitation as my speed it good when I'm sitting next to it, in my bedroom it drops by 10 meg.

Should I try a different router? I have a business HH3.
