BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT infinity installed today, 38meg download, not too bad!

did have a bit of trouble with BT though. I gave SKY 1 months notice and signed up with BT. 4 weeks later BT home phone ok, then I got an email stating my broadband was 1 week late. OK, 1 week without BB isnt too bad(how wrong was I!) ok, the day came for my infinity to be installed between 8am - 1pm.

I'm at work all day, so the wife stays in, 3.00pm arrives and no BT engineer, so I call BT to be told that no BT engineer has the job and they would call me in the morning to get a suitable time for me!

I give her a mouthfull(sorry whom ever u r) and tell her that a suitable time for me would be now! today!

She said she was sorry... but it was out of her hands. I asked her if I was was still in my notice period and she said yes, so I cancelled my phone/broadband with BT. She said she would knock £20 off my bill.....no thanks cancel it!

within 5 mins my wife had a call from the engineer asking if she was going to be in within the next 30mins.....1hr later broadband was installed and working great!

much better than 8meg from SKY!

Do you need to use the modem / router they provide with FTTC? I'm toying with the idea of dropping Virgin Media in favour of BT as I'm having issues with the VM.
You don't need to use either, people are using their own modems (Draytec) with success.

I use the BT modem though, with the firmware unlocked, and my own cable router which I used to use with crappy Virgin.

Interleaving going mad.

I want it to go down, sub 15 ms ping would be lovely. Damned Ilford hop!

Sorry meant to add what are people views on it? Any major issues?

I only got the phone line activated on Monday and when i was checking by house number and postcode it said I could have it but when I checked with the home telephone number it said it was not available until I phoned BT up on Tuesday who confirmed the line was good and I could get Infinity.

Infinity in one word brilliant!

My connection took about 10 days to finally settle down, getting 37/7 now, not bad considering I have rotten cables.

Works superbly, haven't had a single problem with it, expect a cable fault due to having aluminum cables, which are due to be replaced soon.

Well you seem very happy with it.

I have been using o2 broadband for the past 4 years with speeds of 4/1 so hoping for a big difference.

Oooh BT are being sent out to install FTTC today for me, a big thumbs up for Zen for being very good at sorting this mess out which BT caused.

You get what you pay for :) Support is one of the major reasons I love Zen.

For anyone with this what is the area coverage per cabinet?

There are a few months to go, but all I can see so far is a cabinet which is diagonally 380m as the crow flies from me. The copper cable route could be very convoluted to 3>4 times that.

I had no date at all, then 2 weeks ago it changed to June 30th, then yesterday it changed to "Available now". Crazy, but ordered it and I will have the install on the 4th next week.

My biggest issue, is that the master socket is in the kitchen on the ground floor. My home office is 2 floors up directly above the master socket. To wire through the house with an extension, would require a HUGE amount of ugly cable going around 2 flights of stairs and about 6 doorways. The easy way is to simply run an outside cable straight up, which also would go neatly behind the guttering. But I understand BT won't do any outside work!

I get about 1Meg extra if I use the test socket rather than having my extension wiring with ADSL2+. So asking BT to relocate the master socket sounds like a bad idea to me because I will probably lose sync speed as a result. I think the internal extension wiring is not that great.

It sounds like the best thing is just to get them to install it in the kitchen. And then after he leaves, I will simply run an ethernet cable myself up the wall afterwards. It would be a lot easier if they would agree to drill holes through the outside wall!!

Make tea and biscuits, if he's nice he'll do the work for you. The engineer I had was in my loft for an hour rerouting my master socket.

Tea and biscuits at the ready.

They are actually now coming on the 3rd next week. They bumped me to the 5th after I already booked because the day became full (weird). But I am not in the 5th so I kicked up a bit of a fuss and they moved me a day earlier instead. The HH3 will be sent express now so it comes tomorrow. Although I will throw it away and use my Netgear WNDR4500 after they leave. Apparently though they like to install with the HH3 first to prove it all works.
