BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

The way i understand it is that the 80/20 will be via FTTC (as 40/10 is at the moment) wereas the 100meg service is (IIRC) FTTP ?

BT have put up a page for us to register interest in their 80/20 service.

"We'll be announcing prices for the new speeds soon. If you want to be the first to hear from us please register below and we'll let you know as soon as we can – or watch this space for updates."

I had a problem with my pfsense last night so i ended up having to reinstall it but in the process i had to connect to my bt homehub and to my amazement some how wireless has been turned on and i had various peoples phones in the dns name list. So either the bt homehub turned wireless on by itself remotely or during a reboot it decided to enable it and it was open ffs.

I am realy not happy about this. Plus if you turn on the wireless then bt can resell the bandwidth for a second time using bt openzone. Which you have an option to disable it, only when wireless is enabled. But i see no reason why wireless should automatically turn itself on and the rest of the settings remain the same. No wonder i have been having timeouts.

So i advise to prehistorically check your router wireless settings to make sure that BT don't remotely turn it on so that they can resell your bandwidth.

This used to happen all the time when I as on ADSL with them and the homehub thing first came out. Turned out it was when they pushed out new firmware at night. We'd either wake up to a defaulted router, or some horrid combination of settings and need reseting. This sounds like they're doing this again. It was a few years ago, but I'm sure you could disable the automatic updating.

Do you need to use the modem / router they provide with FTTC? I'm toying with the idea of dropping Virgin Media in favour of BT as I'm having issues with the VM.

Think I'm going to have to phone BT as my infinity connection seems very random. The max I ever get is around 31 mbps but more often than not its around 4-20 mbps.... All weekend if was at 20 mbps and not even resets of the router/modem would budge that. Does anyone have any ideas why this could be happening?
I'm quite close to my cab so thought i would get close to 40gb plus that's what BT said I should get very close to....

Same way as you do with FTTC, on the BT checker. If it says you can get 100mb, then you have FTTP.

ok thanks :) I was reading on the B.T forum that it should be available by April 2013 for people to have the FTTP installed if you already have the FTTC on your line ,not sure how correct this is ? but i did read in the national newspaper where B.T want 100meg service installed by 2014 again not sure if its paper talk ?

Have you tried pressing the reset button (the one you need a paper clip/pin to reach) on the back of the HH?

My speed keeps dropping (quite dramatically) and that normally sorts it out.

I put it down to their home hub being rubbish. I will be replacing it when I have some money.

Just had my order cancelled with "Incompatible Technology on the line". I am currently trying to find out more information and plus another scheduled installation date :(

Guys can someone sort me out as im a little confused.

When u complete the order u get [email protected] logins details emailed as the broadband username and password etc ? It is not for the BT billing site as that is another email i setup which i have tested working and im logged in viewing my e-bill.

I have no idea what the actual login is for though? I think i have it correct that you do not need a login for the actual VDSL modem?

BUT i saw people use the bt [email protected] as the login for thier non HH3 routers? What is the password though for them though?

And what are the default details for the home hub 3 and how come is has a different password printed on the back?

Confused...

For setting PPPoE details use:

Code:
username: [email protected]
password: bt (technically doesn't matter, and if your router requires more, just make it btbtbtbt or something)

Password on the back of the HH3 is for the router settings.
