BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Any more news on Sky Fibre yet? Is the 10th April set in stone now for the live date? For customers on their unlimited LLU service I assume it will just be an increase of £12.50 on our bills? I already pay them £100 a month for all my services so they can stick any install fees!

Excellent! In that case, email the support email address ASAP asking to be put onto the trial. It's only going on for less than 2 weeks, but you can see if you want to keep 80/20 after it goes live (the pricing is still being decided, but it's free for the trial).

I have emailed them, so lets see how I get on. :D

Well happy after weeks of having BT Infinity installed i could only ever achieve 20 down / 8 up, even though im very close to the cab and the modem is synced at 80mb. Figured there was a problem with congestion with BT's network (wouldn't surprise me, it is cornwall afterall). Randomly tried today and now have the full speed, very happy :)

Just tested again:

Sorry for another question, but how far from the exchange were you on copper before FTTC and what sort of connection did you get ?

Not tooo sure where the exhange is, from memory on old ADSL my attenudation was 40dB, and i synced around 6 meg, our phone line has always been very poor there are crackles and noise on the line used to get constant dissconections and loss of sync.

Line is still relatively poor with Infinity but never lose sync (i guess because of how close i am to the cab).

Thanks Acolyte, just a waiting game for my cabinet to updated, the exchange area is listed for FTTC with a very helpful date of '2012'. Hope all remains well with your connection.

Huh, a second one since yesterday. Looks like the traffic reconvergence after that switch failure yesterday has done BT customers some good :D

Torrents are full speed 4.4Mb/s now, they used to be about 10-20kb/s no matter what time of day or day it was. Happy :)

EDIT: some line stats, if anyone finds them useful

Your Attainable rate is less than 80Mb which seems rather poor for a distance of 100m or less from the cabinet.
I would have expected quite a bit over 100Mb attainable on such a short distance.

Also your SNRM looks quite low too.
I would have expected somewhere nearer 30dB for so short a distance.

xdslcmd info --pbParams & xdsl info --stats in a telnet terminal would provide useful statistics.

Don't know what's going on today but my connection appears to have rather improved :)

bt infinity has just come online in my area and im tempted.
i use newsgroups, do they throttle or cap it in any way?

when i was with virgin media 50mb, they'd literally block the ports from 8am to 12am which was annoying if you wanted to download something small quickly.

also youtube hd streaming performance during the evening was absolutely terrible.

so whats bt infinity like both for newsgroups (ssl port) and hd streaming?

Ive had Infinity since March/April 2010 as im on one of the first exchanges enabled. There used to be a 300Mb limit before you got throttled, however they removed it quite some time ago.
Currently I can hit 750GB a month via giganews SSL with no throttling at all!

That's what I would have guessed as I had a similarly remarkable increase (28Mb -> 38Mb) when they moved my profile.

Ill do another test in a bit, our house wiring isnt the best and its on a 20m cheap ebay RJ11 cable which i suspect isnt helping.

I've got a 20m Ethernet cable between my modem and router so I could get the modem right by the phone socket. Could be worth trying.
