BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Woke up this morning and ran a test first thing really expecting it to have gone back
to the old 21/24Mb, but no :) I'll swap over and get the line stats later and report back.

Due here in june, all the cabinets around town have new ones a few feet away and the guys that were fitting the cables left a week ago, No repsonse from the trial email I did months ago though , hope it aint long now :)

Is there any reason for my line to come up in speed testers as using Manchester as its closest server, or why I'd get circa 20-25ms pings to Manchester and closer to 40ms for London.... considering I live in West London?

Is this BT using utterly retarded routing and sending me to Manchester before leaving the BT network rather than London?

I noticed it straight away but figured I'd give them a bit of time to sort it out, speed has been awesome since it was installed just over a week ago. Just the pings kinda suck for London game servers considering.

Is this something to go on BT forums about, or e-mail support, or does everyone get routed through London because BT are retards?

How do i configure the thinkbroadband ping / quality test to work on homehub?

I've set one up but its registering 100% packet loss so im guessing theres some setting hidden away somewhere that i need to disable?

It'll be BT's retarded routing - possibly your routed via sheffield and then back to London again!

I'm currently being route from the middle of Somerset -> Sheffield -> London to get out to the internet :(

You can't.

The homehub doesn't accept incoming ICMP ping requests and there's no way to enable it.

thinking of leaving BE as my contract has expired and I want faster upload speeds for streaming and I spend most my time gaming with the odd streams/large downloads.

Is there anything I should be worried about with the BT service or should ensure the engineer does to get optimum performance as my master socket is downstairs and my room is upstairs where my pc is!

How much are you all paying?

edit - I see sky also have fttc coming April, think I read something about their upload only being 2meg though :'(

I just want the best possible latency with highest speeds that isnt congested!

Just had my infinity installed. The engineer was absolutely top and was quite happy to drill to the outside and run a cable up the side of the building. He did a very neat job. He left the master where it was, and ran a data extension with an RJ11 faceplate in my home-office. So I can actually plug the modem in either the kitchen or the home-office.

The predictor said 32 down and 5.7 up. I exceeded this comfortably...

According to his tester, it was hitting the hard stop at 40 down and 9 up. Am I right to understand without hacking the modem, that if the down connect was 9, I wouldn't hit above 8 anyway due to QoS?

can confirm most of the fttx is coming around 12th april so now begs the question of which company is best for:
phone/broadband with best gaming capabilities and upload speeds!
BT/Plusnet/TalkTalk?

How are the above with torrents/traffic management/hidden stuff.

Sky are no good as I need more than 2meg upload which is a shame as I could get a good deal if I was to take their TV also.

I need to stream the games I play and 2meg upload isnt enough!

Its mainly
gaming > reliability > speed

Thread on digital spy suggests the 80/20 upgrade will be free but you will need to renew your contract. Guy giving the information works for BT and said it was correct at the time of posting.

I fail to see how BT or anyone can charge extra easily for 80/20 because then there needs to be a speed increase guarantee or your money back...which I don't think is a mechanism they really want.

For example, the predictor said I would get 32Meg...but I have maxed out the 40meg afrer install.... but how much more is there in the can? If it means I go from 40 to 42, then its hardly worth paying more. If I go from 40-60, then I might pay a bit extra for that. But the predictors won't really help determine that. So a recontract is the only fair thing to do in my opinion.

Im on Aquiss and they will be charging an extra £5/Month for the 80/20 upgrade when it goes live. I don't get FTTC untill June so I'll assume it'll be base + £5 then also.

If they do, then they would have to agree if you don't get a positive speed increase, at least another 10Meg more, then you won't have to pay more. Otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever.

An interesting point, but you have to remember ISPs have been selling "up to" for years. I'm sure they're not supposed to do that now though.

Something which supports your point though, is that whilst on the trial I've sat happily at 70mbit for the most part (80mbit attainable but not synced to that) and easily hitting 20mbit up (26mbit attainable). However, last Friday, an Openreach van was working on the road. A couple of hours later I look at my SNR graph and it's dropped a good 4-5dB. Worse, is it seems to be slowly decreasing. Now I'm only getting 70mbit attainable down, and only just 20mbit attainable up. Why? I don't know. But if it's just interference of more people getting FTTC, before long I'm going to be back at 40/10 anyway, at which point I would stop paying (if I was paying now)

Im looking to upgrade to Infinity, but would have to cancel my current o2 contract.

Has anyone managed to get a better deal over the phone compared to the online tarrifs?
Also has anyone cancelled to switch, did it take long and did you lose connection while doing so?

Cheers!
