BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Sky are no good as I need more than 2meg upload which is a shame as I could get a good deal if I was to take their TV also.

I need to stream the games I play and 2meg upload isnt enough!

Its mainly
gaming > reliability > speed

Im pretty sure the 40/2 is only for the initial release. they will be making standard 40/10 after a while

Im looking to upgrade to Infinity, but would have to cancel my current o2 contract.

Has anyone managed to get a better deal over the phone compared to the online tarrifs?
Also has anyone cancelled to switch, did it take long and did you lose connection while doing so?

Cheers!

I cancelled while with ADSL24 (LLU package), the process itself dragged out simply over a mixup with the online installation service. I booked a date but later changed it online, BT guy came on the original date, no one home and the automatic booking service rescheduled a new date. This is where the delay started, I was unable (along with BT) to cancel or reschedule a new date until the auto service selected date was past! I still had internet throughout due to having a couple of months to run on my existing contract.
As for a better deal, I was able to pay for my line rental for the year in advance online saving a few quid, this was something that BT failed to mention to other people I'd spoken to who had dealt with BT via phone.

Seems odd to me that BT haven't upgraded Cambridge yet, I'd have thought they would want to try and break Virgins stranglehold on the broadband here.

BT FTTC broadband availability

You are connected to the Cambridge telephone exchange.

FTTC should be available in your area from 01/03/2012
Oh well!

We tried BT broadband (ADSL 2) before, and had no end of problems. In the end it lead to the threat of court action before they let me out of my contract. And we're 2.05km from the exchange. Any ideas how this might affect FTTC? Or, if I wanted to leave Virgin, am I likely to have to wait for FTTH?

Slight problem with my Infinity.

I also have BT Vision which uses QoS on the line. After I watch a BT vision program, it incorrectly sets my IP profile to about 11Meg, which not coincidentally was the connect speed I had with ADSL 2+ beforehand. So clearly what is happening is that there is some leftover from my old provisioning.

Rebooting the modem cures this...I am in the 10 day stablisation period and have now rebooted 4 times in 24 hours which isn't very clever. I didn't realise what was causing the wrong profile at first.

I am still getting a full 40Meg connect, 37.5 download on speedtest, but I started off (as I think all connections do) with a ping of around 14ms on speedtest which I believe means the lowest level of interleaving is enabled.....and I need to leave this modem alone to allow it to recognise the possiblity of removing all interleaving.

Went through to India and got bounced all over the place until I lost my rag and asked for supervisor. They understood the problem and asked engineering (BT wholesale) to reset the IP profiles for Vision. We will see if it works....

So apparently FTTC is available in my area now. A friend told me the Bipac 7800n is a good router, any advice / other router suggestions? I do a lot of online gaming and Usenet. Speed checkers rate my line at 61.2Meg Down / 20 Up.

Had Infinity installed for 11 days now, although it was shaky at the start with speeds all over the place, things seemed to have calmed down and my line is consistently getting the speeds below.

Is there any reason why BT have started selling Infinity as a 38 down, 9.5 up product? Their speed checker still says I can achieve 40/10, is this just an update by the marketing department to account for overheads, rather than upping the sync rates so that the speeds are 40/10 after the overheads are taken into account?

Ha! So they have! That's rather amusing. I guess they got in trouble or people were constantly phoning up wondering why their 40/10 product was coming out on speedtests as 37-38/8.

Of course it's half overhead, half their own fault. They limit the connections based on kilobits per second, and they do it at 40,000 and 10,000. Which, as we all well know isn't 40 MEGAbit/second, as it's base 1024 not 1000. So even off the bat the best you can get is 39.0625 megabits/sec.
