BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Welcome all you late-comers to 80/20! Fun isn't it?!
At least you didn't have to pay though. Zen announcing their prices next week (for the mean time my connection is still 80/20 for free), we'll see how much they want for it  (not that I'm paying)

Most are charging an extra 6£ a month for it, so I'd expect teh rest to follow suit.

Too close for FTTC means you don't actually have a cabinet because your line goes direct to the exchange.

Strangely I noticed a green cab 10 meters from the BT exchange this morning after you told me this

I am not sure if it was a link to another cab a bit further out, however if not, then could it be possible there are "some" properties directly near the exchange being routed through this cab 10 meters from the exchange, then in to the exchange? Could be for the newer properties which don't have direct links to the exch

Think of it like this in regards to an 18month contract. After the first twelve months, if BT dont contact you, its a simple as saying to them, right im paying X amount each month for the last 12months and your looking for better rates. Normally, which has happened to me, they come back with a cracking offer which ends contract early and start a fresh 12 or 18month contract. So originally you set yourself to 18months but in actual fact, your probably going to be with them at least two years which will go through in a flash.

I think Sky can stick it and I'll go with BT. Just how big a deal is the traffic shaping thing? Is it only P2P? What about Usenet?

The shaping is a good thing, keeps ping nice and steady 24/7. Who would risk using public torrents on their home internet
anyway? I was until recently a big newsgroup user, then I gained access to a private torrent site (IPT - I have 2 invites spare if someone wants PM me), haven't seen any throttling at all either direction.

Public torrents maybe, private ones are great, loads of random content compared to Usenet.

I always swore by Usenet till recent.

Torrents need to die.
Would be bad for Usenet if torrents died, they would become the main focus for anti-copyright quite quickly..

I think this will happen for all sites that host public torrents. Sites should be shut down if they are hosting illegal aid to content.

Easier to shut down a Usenet provider than it is a torrent site.

Nearly impossible to shut down a torrent site, it would just reappear in another country.

FU all that have been upgraded already :(

Seems the upload is abit slower than it should be? is the profile 20000kbps?

Ah Chris, I guess a lot of people I've seen don't have QOS off.

@coughs - its rare that torrents are even throttled at all anyway, unless you live near a load of students.

Traffic shaping on p2p that is it. Not sure how long BT can sustain this output.

For p2p its not good as people will constantly upload all the time but, Usenet, honestly I've been on infinity for under a month and, I'm just out of **** to download. When I get say a TV ep or something, I'm simply spending half the time downloading, which leaves the network free half the time.

The main difference with both 40mb and now 80mb, is I'm just using the internet for a shorter amount of time, I'm not using it "more" so to speak. It's probably better for the network. As at any given time there will be less people actually on it.

Of course that might change if we get some good 2k tv's/screens and an increase in video quality content, which doesn't really look like happening any time soon.

Ha I switched to torrents because Usenet was boring me, Uploading is pretty enjoyable...:D

Also its nice that torrents have more random content, Usenet seems to be just group releases.
