BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Before the upgrade I was showing 70000 (70meg) downstream on the bt infinity modem. This was when I first got it installed 4 months ago.

Why have my download speeds not really increased much at all? Also why am I getting so much errors on my line?

Your cab must have filled up quite a bit. More users = more crosstalk which lowers the speed. BT are working on a new 30a profile that OFCOM need to approve and vectoring which near enough eliminates crosstalk. These won't be put in place for some time yet though as they're a work in progress.

Exchange distance is irrelevant (unless it's TOO close, in which case you can't get FTTC at all anyway!). What you need to know is how far away the cabinet is.

Thanks for the info. Any way of telling how far you are from the actual cabinet then? I don't see this on SamKnows. Also, do you happen to know what would constitute as being too close for FTTC?

Hmm seems you guys just dived straight in and went for the upgrade.

I was advised by BT to wait untill august, so to take advantage of a loyalty discount.

I was only a month into my 18 month contract. There certainly wasn't any loyalty discount waiting for me in August! :p

August is too long to wait just to save a couple quid anyway!

There is no such thing as 'too close'. What people mean when they say that is that you are connected to the exchange.

You will only get FTTC if your phone line is connected to a cabinet that has been linked to the parent exchange by fibre. If your phone line is connected directly to the exchange, hope that FTTP is coming to you soon.

Look at the street paths outside your house. Find the BT manhole covers (they're rectangular). They will be dotted along the path at frequent intervals. Eventually you will come across a green cabinet.

Then walk back, casually, to your house counting your steps. Multiply your steps by 1.53452333333 and then you will have the distance to your cab in meters.

Too close for FTTC means you don't actually have a cabinet because your line goes direct to the exchange.

Much appreciated! I've not moved there yet but am confident the nearest cabinet won't be too far.

Did you just wait and it sorted itself out? My activation date was meant to be today :(

If you go back a few pages mate you will see my posts about poor speed tests for most of the day, even on speedtest my position moved from Aberdeen to London. Then later in evening it came good again, and today it became fantastic :D
