BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

If anything id say latency is OK and the UL is a tad slow :P

Hmm, BT speed check says i will go from 38mb to just 41mb with the update? I only live 300m from the cab

I'm about the same distance as far as I know, and the speed checker said 50/13 which I'd hoped would be a bit conservative as when I originally had it installed it said I'd get 33Mb/s and I had quite a solid 37-38Mb/s.

It was at 46/7 when it first switched over, and now I'm at 39/7, this being limited by the IP profile which was 46Mb then went down to 40Mb. Although my upload IP profile is set to 20Mb and my speed hasn't changed at all, even though my attainable rate is actually around the estimated speed.

Unfortunately I think it's partially to do with the quality of my line going from the house to the cabinet. I'm not much of an expert on the line stats, but as far as I know they aren't too good.

I can't complain though, going from an unstable 4Mb/s connection a few months ago to this is a hell of an improvement.

Nice to see someone else with a actually slow connection, Fox. When I see people moaning about their 'useless' 5mbit etc it's quite annoying! Did your date not recently get pushed back to June or something? And then now forwards again...

69.7Mb download
20.0Mb upload

if i get Infinity...I just can't be asked with all the faffing about lol. Would like the increased upload more than anything...

Doesn't it need to be plugged in next to a socket at all times or something?

What do you mean by plugged in next to a socket? It's not really much different from ADSL in that it needs to be connected to a phone line but with the way it's installed it has to be plugged into the master socket which has a new filter installed by a BTO tech. If your master socket isn't located near where you want your router to sit then they will run an extension for you from the master socket to a location of your choice.

I came from 10 years of 1.5 meg download and 0.5 meg upload - got infinity in September and the speed still makes me grin :D

It did move to June, yes. Then last weekend got an email saying its available - went on the checker and now its ordered :)

I have just realised that I took the faceplate off my master socket years ago and plugged the router into the socket behind it to eek out more performance.

I've since lost the faceplate.

Is this going to be an issue..?

Doubt it'll matter, the BT guy will just put the new VDSL faceplate on then most likely a new front for you.

When I had it fitted I had an old ADSL faceplate that was fitted by BT back in 2001 when they only did engineer installs. The BT guy just took the old ADSL faceplate off, put the VDSL one on and popped on a new regular front and let me keep the ADSL faceplate too. They shouldn't care :)

What extension? i have just recently run cat5 up the stairs and into the router...i want minimal effort lol, so i can have my router at my desk (bedroom)

but as i already thought, and what you just said it needs to be near the master socket which in most cases is downstairs...

And the last time i asked BT about extensions it was £80+ and labor...

No as part of the installation they'd run a data extension for the VDSL for you if required but if you already have cabling in place you're fine.

You could let the BT guy run another cable from the master socket to wherever you want and then you can plug your modem straight in there. This would be done for no extra cost as part of the installation. Or you could just use the existing cable you've already run which I presume has RJ11 plugs on each end anyway - VDSL uses exactly the same cables so you'd be able to have your VDSL modem and router located upstairs with no extra effort.

They may or may not want to use your existing cabling as part of the install but there's no reason why you can't let them plug the kit in down there then plug in your existing cable run and move the kit upstairs once the BT tech's gone.

Words cannot describe the level of anticipation I have for my install date :D

You actually have a better connection now than I had before switching over so I can relate exactly to how you are feeling :) It's nice to think that every single Mb will be a massive bonus.

Cheers for the explanation, yeah they are RJ11's at both ends.

No, BT completely replace the entire socket.

here is my speedtest so far.

Well my second order for the speed upgrade has disappeared from the order tracker :p, wonder why ... meh so not bothered to call again, so over the phone: failed to track, online speed upgrade was tracking until this morning... now disappeared

Probably the demand is overwhelming ...

I'm curious, could i have my router and Modem downstairs whilst my PC is upstairs, i want my PC wired into the Modem, or would the modem have to go downstairs (where the master socket is) and the router upstairs with my PC?
