BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Then this just adds more confusion to some of the installations I've seen.

No it's pretty simple. Basically off the VDSL filter the engineer fits there are two IDC terminals on the back which can be used for wiring in a data extension. The cable running from this can either terminate in RJ11 so it plugs straight into the VDSL modem or an RJ11 socket.

Either way, it's still the same thing as being plugged straight into the master socket as it can't be ran off any existing extensions.

I'm beginning to wonder if it really is worth going with Sky for this seeing as you guys are getting amazing speeds right now.

Is BT's traffic shaping really that bad? I'd class myself as an average internet user - HD streaming via netflix being the main thing I seem to be doing atm along with BF3 and some Xbox Live.

Mine is great, i stream a lot of iPlayer HD stuff, never buffers, pings on all games are great. The only thing that is a bit up and down is torrents, but usually they are great too. Very good service from BT IMO, just hope they can keep it up.

Ah ok cheers :)

Just checked my order and notice this
"Your appointment is no longer required, as our engineer can connect your line without requiring access to your premises. The engineer will work to connect your line at the exchange."

Reading online it seems to be an error in a lot of cases, did anyone else have it? Might give them a ring anyway.

Was this a new Infinity order or the faster upgrade?

Zero issues here with streaming (though not tried anything more than short 1080 clips),gaming. In fact nothing but delighted in now being able to share multiple connects, gaming, dowloading etc etc at same time. The traffic shaping as mentioned before is for Torrents and some people (myself included) never see it, albeit it would appear it can be worked around.

So you don't have Infinity at the moment??

Seems abit strange as the OR engineer will be the one to bring the modem.

This happened to my sister recently, she was left without a phone or broadband for over a week.

It's getting posted to arrive a couple of days before, I'm guessing somebody else has already got infinity on the street (Due to it being the only way to get above ~1Mb) so its configured or something.

The router/homehub will be posted to you a few days in advance NOT the VDSL2 modem.

Unless you're migrating from an existing FTTC supplier you will definitely require an OR visit.

No its not, your router is. Your order is messed up, I'd go on the forums asap and try to sort it.

Also they have to switch YOUR line over to fibre at the cabinet, doesn't matter what anyone else has on your street.

Well thats what i was told on the phone.
She made a note on my account anyway, so if i do need a visit atleast there is reason to complain.

They post the router / welcome pack and the BT person brings the modem. Oh and check the first bill they don't double charge on the router posting.

The only thing that BT manage is P2P at peak times.

The exact times, speed and ways round have been covered in this thread, normally around every 3 pages.

Let's hope you're right.

Did you supply a MAC? I had this very issue, i.e. no engineer required! I was called on Sunday afternoon (two weeks ago when I had it installed) to say to disregard that message.

They are pretty good at getting you sorted from my experience, 3 orders had to be placed before I got connected and they also sent out a replacement homehub because the first went walkies, all arrived in time for setup. Reason 3 times? Be messed it up I think because I ended up with an escalated order having said I am not free any other time other then that posted.

B.T don,t always Traffic manage on p2p a lot is how your Netwoek is performing too :) The times they give are when it will be at its worse and be ready to be throttled :) A friend of mine has Infinity and he downloads at max speed even at peek times and he pointed out that most of his area is Virgin Media ha! :)

I just ordered Infinity today, estimated 71mb on the BT site when I ordered. Install date should be Monday 23/04. I called VM and cancelled my 50mb.

I rebooted and ran BT Speedtest when I got in tonight and the speeds have remained at ~45/~14 but, interestingly, the profile on BT ST now show a max achieveable upload of 20 (where it was 10 this morning) but teh download is still at just over 46

What do you think the real chances are of the download max achievable profile moving giveing i can theorhetically hit the max upload ?

Our result, not too bad to be honest, it's better than it was!

Hoping it may go up a bit but if it doesn't then I'm happy with that.

Just done a speed test after upgrading to 80/20 last week.

Not bad, although I'm slightly disappointed, it's now syncing at 70763 down and 20000 up. In October when I got FTTC the maximum downstream was 79088, so I'm guessing a lot of people nearby have signed up. Hopefully we'll get the 30a profile soon, although I'm guessing that’s over a year away.
