BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

They will call from the can to let you know your line will go down while they swap over then come to you when it's done (should only take a few mins)

The engineer that did mine, didn't phone to inform me. I just noticed my internet access stopping and I assumed it was BT. A minute later the BT engineer appeared on my doorstep. :D
My cabinet is only a minutes walk from my house.

Thats cool, I can just head home when I get that call then :)

A few questions you might want to ask the engineer, while stuffing him/her with tea/coffee and biccies.

1. Where is the cabinet?
2. Are the cables to my home, copper or aluminium?
3. What's my attenuation?
4. Can I take a photo of the JDSU/EXFO line diagnostics.

Right spoken to BT about their fibre broadband and if i go to top end package ie unlimited everything then im looking at 76mbps download and 20mb upload which is pretty tasty to all extents and purposes. They have quoted me £34 per month for the first 3 mths then reverts to £45 a month. That includes the fibre and telephone line.

I would go to sky but the fact is that in Feb i signed into another 12 mth contract with BT so id have to shell out a lot more if i wanted to cancel my BT line, which im not willing to do.

Just need to call up Be on monday and cancel my line although they said i have to 30 days notice but that shouldnt be a problem really.

One question i have to ask, do you have to use the modem that BT supply or can you buy another make and use it??...not sure if there are any fibre modems out there as it is. Also what is the BT fibre modem like??...is it any good??

It's not a fibre modem as such and to be honest I do hate the fact it's marketed as fibre when it's only the backend that's fibre. It's VDSL2 so any VDSL2 modem should work fine but there aren't many about. In fact the only others that I know of are the ones integrated into the Draytek routers (2750 and 2850 I believe). Quite a few people on here are using those on BT Infinity with no problems.

There's nothing wrong with the Openreach VDSL modem though really other than that it runs pretty warm but mine's never given me any hassle. Personally I prefer the idea of keeping the BT one as it means I am free to use any device I want instead of being restricted to two devices at present. Having seperate modem and router isn't particularly elegant but spending £100+ to save a plug socket being used makes no sense in my opinion.

I'm sure as VDSL gets more popular in the UK then we'll see more VDSL modems and routers appearing in time.

Cheers Phemo appreciate the advice you have given. Guess ill stick with what they give me...just have to wait till Monday now to get my Be adsl cut off.

Kimsufi 2G is a better deal.

Only 100Mbps though? Do you have one?

Also - ** : The traffic is unlimited. If you exceed 5TB/month for the Kimsufi 2G, 10TB/month for the Kimsufi 16G or 15TB/month for the 24G Kimsufi the connection will be limited to 10 Mbps.

Does that include download traffic?

I don't really like providers that allow VNC, quite annoying when people extract a Blu-ray while your trying to download/seed.

Can't beat torrent only servers, nearly a gigabit throughput :D

alright - hoping someone can answer here me, theres 167 pages on this thread which is mental so the answer is probably in it ..but...

im looking to switch to bt infinity 2, unlimited useage.
i use newsgroups for downloading - normally between 12am-8am when im tucked away in bed.
will this be alright with bt? i should be able to download at the max speed unthrottled and unshaped between those hours on newsgroups right?

also whats streaming on youtube in HD like?

im currently on virgin media national service L Package, and its absolute ****.
third question - how much will it cost to cancel my virginmedia contract? theres 3 months left on it - by reckoning, that should equal £36 to cancel - going off the new ofcom early termination fees. can anyone confirm?

thanks.

Whatever you do, just make sure you don't miss them. I still shudder when I think back at what all happened over mine.

Please elaborate. I've put 'Please call 15 minutes before' on the 'Special instructions' section and was intending to leave work when they call rather than spend the day at home only for him to turn up at 5.30...

All things being equal you should be fine :)

My story cut as short as possible, I changed my install date online using the BT service and it appeared to accept it ok. Returned home from work one evening, which just happened to be the original install date day to be greated with a BT card through the door saying the BT engineer had called and couldn't gain entry, blaa blaa blaa may incur charges etc and a new date would be issued. Yip new date was issued a few weeks later, and no matter how many calls to BT and even contacting the CEO office and being assigned my own personal BT customer relations / problem solving hit person they couldn't change this date until it had passed! Hence me just saying don't miss the BT engineer :) the last thing you want having waited so long is another extension.

I will add that BT in the end resolved the issue to my satisfaction by arranging the new date exactly when I wanted it, crediting my bill and gave me 3 months free.

100Mb/s and it can be sustained 24/7 as it isn't shared. Download traffic isn't counted nor is internal (OVH & Kimsufi).

Another reason why shared servers suck. Archives can be extracted without a GUI. GUI's tend to attract newbies.

Think I can get more upload? I'm slightly disappointed, I was getting 8.5 down and 9 up before.

Stats from the modem (they're in the unlocking thread) are all good and QOS is off.

I was hoping to get closer to 18, not that 1.5 meg matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Still waiting on my upgrade hopefully will be tomorrow morning.

Hi

Same here, signed up on the 12th, I then got an email stating it would be completed on the 13th. It hasn't

I rang yesterday to be told that I wouldn't really notice any speed increase until I started to download from newsgroups etc... I then told the guy that I am getting 37/8 he then put me through to technical.

After spending 10 mins on hold, I got through to india? to be told that I would receive a call from them in the next 3 days, to activate it..

we will see tomorrow....

Good luck with that :P

My experience of BT is that Infinity has been first class, their engineer was top notch but their CS is abysmal. I lost track of the times i was "promised" to be called back (and wasn't) when trying to get my install sorted out after BT royally *****d it up

Interested to hear the outcome though as im getting 38.37 / 9.05 on the 40/10 profile and their estimate for Infinity 2 is actually slower :P

Yeah the BT tester reports 43ms latency there which means clearly the results of that can't be trusted since my ping to decent UK servers is generally 10 to 12ms, for example, the BBC site:

Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=241
