BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I'm curious, could i have my router and Modem downstairs whilst my PC is upstairs, i want my PC wired into the Modem, or would the modem have to go downstairs (where the master socket is) and the router upstairs with my PC?

A lot depends firstly on the BT person, some will go the extra mile to make sure you are happy and some are more interested in finishing the job as quickly and as easily as possible. The modem has to be connected to the master socket and in most (not all) cases it will be downstairs, but BT can move the socket or even run an extension if required.

Id rather have them both downstairs anyway, that way i get better signal when im using my phone etc via wireless... another stupid question how thick will the cat5 cable be, will it be easy enough to go under metal carpet seperators? i already have a route for it to go up the stairs but theres a bit just before the stairs and at the top of the stairs where it will need to go under another carpet sperator or under the carpet... thanks in advance i'm a bit of a noob with this sort of thing

Think I can get more upload? I'm slightly disappointed, I was getting 8.5 down and 9 up before.

Stats from the modem (they're in the unlocking thread) are all good and QOS is off.

I was hoping to get closer to 18, not that 1.5 meg matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Hi mate,

Have u noticed any speed fluctuation during the evening?
I am getting now 30-50 meg max. But it than jumps back again to 74.9

My ping and profile hasnt changed and im quite confused in whats happening
Over at the bt forums theyre telling people to wait for 10 day training period for the line before they can investigate. But when i first had infinity back in october my line synced at the same speed day and nights no matter how many times i rebooted modem/router until i switched to 80/20 and now theyre saying to wait 10 days. Im hoping this is not a bad coincidence with me unlocking the modem and i might have somehow damage/confuse the modem? Are u chaps noticing any fluctuations on speed at all? Is this a bt network/congestion issue ?

If you prefer to have both downstairs I can't see it being a problem at all as this will surely be the easiest option for any installer. As for cable thickness I can't honestly say as my existing cabling was used (my master socket was already upstairs), but as told by BT that the cable used was approx the thickness of a pencil.

When I say easiest option, I mean as in plug it in and leave it on wifi only. I've known this to happen.

Just tested this minute, but on a whole it doesn't seem to vary much no matter what time tested.

No change at all mate.

@MilanoChris and DirtyJester,

thanks for replying, rebooted both modem and router this morning before leaving for work and:

will monitor the evenings when i come back from work till the end of the week. if it happens again will need to find out if its my hardware/cabling/pc/modem/router failing to cope or is it bt. i have no friends or family in my area that have infinity so i can compare with theirs, but did check bt status service just now and it reported no issues in my area.

Well I was getting

And teh BT checker told me id get lower speeds :P

I took the plunge for the upgrade anyway and it went through last night (this is after a modem and router reboot):

And

Not a bad increase, although i was hoping for a little more (as always :P)

Hopefully the profile and speeds may increase in teh next 10 days

They're advising letting it settle in for 10 days so expect some fluctuation - imn hoping mine will fluctuate up a bit more :P

Please note that it can take up to 10 days for your BT Infinity speed to stabilise so bear this in mind when doing speed tests during this initial period.

Also, have you rebooted your Modem / Router ?

Not a problem, don't forget that on the speedtest site, top tab 'my results' will list all your tests and makes for an easy comparison.

Mine again this morning

Surely the 'extension' becomes the new master socket no?

No it doesn't because the new master socket faceplate that Openreach fit has two terminals for running a dedicated broadband extension. The engineer would run a cable from the terminals and connect it up directly to the modem, or connect it to a broadband extension socket and then connect a cable to the modem.

Then this just adds more confusion to some of the installations I've seen.

So what if it drops to 30Mb/s? You're not paying for a leased line plus the speed is well above BT's "fault" rate of throughput.

I'm beginning to wonder if it really is worth going with Sky for this seeing as you guys are getting amazing speeds right now.

Is BT's traffic shaping really that bad? I'd class myself as an average internet user - HD streaming via netflix being the main thing I seem to be doing atm along with BF3 and some Xbox Live.

Just checked my order and notice this
"Your appointment is no longer required, as our engineer can connect your line without requiring access to your premises. The engineer will work to connect your line at the exchange."

Reading online it seems to be an error in a lot of cases, did anyone else have it? Might give them a ring anyway.
