BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Sky Fibre Pro will give you up to 80/20, the same as BT Infinity for £30/month. You can't order it online though, you need to call up and order or call to upgrade after installation.

I was predicted 58/20 but actually sync at the full 80/20 with plenty of headroom and am very happy with Sky.

Thanks for the reply, I doubt I will achieve the full 80/20 as the cabinet is quite far away, but it's good to know about the "Pro" package they offer.

Do BT still traffic shape on their top packages? I.e. what benefit would sky offer over BT, if any?

When I picked Sky over BT in November, BT still had traffic shaping which tipped the balance to Sky. With BT ending shaping I don't think there is much between them now to be honest. If it bothers you, Sky IP's are pretty sticky (because they use DHCP to allocate them I guess) whereas you get a new IP every time your PPPoE session drops with BT.

It doesn't bother me either way tbh, but the last time I had ADSL we had a lot of issues with the line (REIN interference) and it got to the stage that I had to phone Sky to get Openreach to come out, and I thought enough was enough.

On the other hand, I pay line rental through Primus telecom (£7.99), just so we have a line in the house, so I don't really want to take the fibre and be forced to take another line with BT themselves.

Just been on to the phone to a friend whose the local BT area supervisor, and he says I'm 600m from the cab, so I'm gonna order it with BT tonight :D

I was wondering if you were on BT Infinity 2 would it be "switched" to 'unlimited BT Infinity 2' or would it just be the same or what would you do.

On my usage monitor it says You have an unlimited product and will never be charged for additional usage anyway and BT Infinity Unlimited so I guess it doesnt really matter.

Just out of interest did he give you any estimate of the speed you can expect to get, I'm a similar distance from the cab although the area I live has not been fibre enabled yet

Just got Infinity today and I'm on the dreaded Poplar Exchange in East London (Canary Wharf) used to get a MAX of 2MB/s line speed but averaged about 1.6MB/s

Now getting a SWEET 31.67MB/s

Downloads on STEAM are about 3.4 - bloooody awesome.

Now I just need to find something to download :D

Couldn't recommend it more....

Well....it was 31.67 before :D

Just an update from me having used it now for a while. Not had any problem with Bt Infinity, got a free upgrade speed-wise and getting a nice speed. Bit slower today than normally but very happy all the same and the upload speed has improved LOADS:

Anyone know a good way to install temporary wall mounts for the Openreach modem (HG612)? I don't really want nasty looking screws/screw holes visible if I can avoid it.

You won't be switched unless you ask to be switched, which would incur a 12 month contract.
Okay I'm getting confused now, and I'm not so sure. Have Infinity 2 customers been upgraded?

My account states BT Unlimited Infinity 2, yet I just registered for the cloud storage and got this text in an email:

Hello.

Good news. Your BT Cloud is ready to use and you've got 2GB.

With BT Cloud, you can upload, protect and share your most important files. It's your secure and private place online, where you store all the personal documents, photos, music and videos from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

there's no way im adding another 12 months to my contract to get the service I originally signed up for. unlimited means unlimited. 80/20 (which in reality for me is 80/16)

not really noticed any throttling. even in p2p I get over 5meg/sec

I'm away from home right now but I did look at the BT safe and it told me I had 2 GB, I looked at adding more and it said I can get 50 GB for free, but I have to extend for 12 months. That's my answer I think, still on the old one. BT should clear up how they show which package you're on as for me it's shows 'unlimited BT Infinity option 2' which according to their main site comes with 50GB of storage and no throttling.

He said "around 50-60Mb" (he put my line in originally), and the official checker is saying 58Mb, so I'll take that as a pretty good indication.

I almost went with a second line although I thought I'd try the line I have now. Basically, I wasn't sure if they just use a second pair within the same cable coming in to the house, or if they'd run a whole new one.. I'd prefer the latter as it means all new copper, but I suspect it's the former.

weird how my results change.

why the difference in ping etc?

i live in gloucester and if i connect to a gloucester server i get this.

if i connect to a london one i get this

i was told id get 69mb down and 19mb up so im very happy with mine

Probably goes to London and then back to Gloucester. 10ms is pretty good to London, I'm in London zone 3 and get 20ms... which we've covered several times over on this thread! :)

Ordered my BT Infinity yesterday with an install date of 1st of March.

Coming from Virgin 100MB so pretty happy with what speed ill be expecting.

Edit: opps! forgot to ask my question: Do I have to use the BT homehub thing they provide? As ive got my own router I would like to use.
