BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Is the 160mb service only available in certain areas too? My exchange went live today but can only seem to get 80/20 max.

I'm totally confused about this FTTP.

I see the option to order online when I put my number in the checker, however when it comes to the order process I see it says I'm not eligible for 160Mb and only offers the standard infinity.

Surely it shouldn't give you the option to order 160Mb, if you can't get it

Yes. Fibre on demand will be available in the spring.

Yea I will be ordering this as soon as its available in my area. I only get 5.8mb/s and 1.1mb/s upload due to aluminium line.

Hopefully the initial install wont cost more than £1000.

These high speed fibre products are nice and downloading at near-FireWire speeds is all well and good, but to be totally honest I think balanced connections are far more beneficial. Balanced residential connections (e.g. 76/76 or even 64/64) over low latency fibre would enable things like decent quality video and audio conferencing. In Denmark the electricity companies offer 100/100 over fibre as a residential product.

I understand BT not wanting to cannibalise their own leased line product sales, but leased lines offer more than just raw bandwidth.

I agree. Having a current connection of 20/20 is pretty good when working from home.

I've done a bit of searching but I admit it wasn't for more than 20 minutes.

Has anyone had any experience with BT Inifinity II and wi-fi vs. Homeplugs? Reason I ask is because I'm getting Inifinity II installed on the 26th and was looking at getting this. But one of my friends who has Infinity II in N.I. says that he was getting about 6MB/s download speeds through wi-fi but 9MB/s through his Homeplugs.

Just wondering how much of a difference wi-fi really makes. I know there are certain conditions which would affect the wi-fi signal such as thick walls/floors etc but I'll be one thin wall away from the Hub.

My upgrade from the 40Mb service seems to have stablised now at 75Mb/17Mb

Pretty happy with that. Glad they made it so easy to upgrade online. I put off doing it because I couldn't be bothered to phone in!

My Homeplugs (TP-Link) seem to be sapping between 10 and 15meg from my download and halfing my upload speeds... I think it's noise and crap wiring in my flat!!... :(

Both my Phone and Tablet (Nexus 4 and Nexus 7) are wireless at 55meg(ish) when sitting 6 to 8 feet from the HH3

I've laid my hands on 20m of CAT6 and I'm popping up into my loft and back down into the Lounge to 'direct' connect my PC... hopefully that'll get me back up to 66meg etc...

So it's your choice which you think might give you the better throughput!!

So far so good. No issues all weekend, downloading at 8 to 9 MBps and upto 2 MBps upload. Stability is good, I don't think it will go much faster then what i'm getting now as i'm around 500mtrs to cab.

Well we have finally been allowed to order fibre lol. Trouble is that the distance is STILL an issue as it only allows option 1, as the line will only support 32Mb

On the plus side, we have 3 adsl lines that we will agregate using MLPPP (I Hope) so in theory at least, we should see 90Mb speeds. First install will happen this Friday...

In typical BT fashion, 2 of the lines are being upgraded, the third one has been "lost". Spent half an hour to be told he would ring me back (and hasn't) and then just spent another 20 minutes going around the houses, finally going through to sales who can't understand why they can't see the order as its there in front of him with totally the wrong address and totally the wrong contact details. At least they got the company name right.

The upshot is that they are sending an engineer on Thursday, one on Friday and another on Monday  At least BT are consistent in their incompetence.

Seems the latest ASA ruling against BT was indeed a hollow one

My date has just moved from 31st March 2013 to March 2014!
As expected they simply push back the dates without reason as they have no intention of activation
My original date was May 2012.......... Thanks BT

Mine just changed on the checker again too, from march to june. Our exchange is enabled and the new cab is there teasing me, bloomin annoying.

Hmm.

I'm half tempted to move to the new un-managed option.

Thing is, I'm moving within a month or so. I'd either have to extend my BT contract or pay up front to BT for the move (unsure what they charge). Either that or pay my way out of the contract (£100 or so from memory) and go with Sky (who I already have my Sky TV with).

Thoughts?
