BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Ordered my BT Infinity yesterday with an install date of 1st of March.

Coming from Virgin 100MB so pretty happy with what speed ill be expecting.

Edit: opps! forgot to ask my question: Do I have to use the BT homehub thing they provide? As ive got my own router I would like to use.

You can use your own router yeah. I use an E3000 with the VSDL2+ modem.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) on Demand

We are currently inviting CPs to participate in our pilot for FTTP on Demand.
FTTP on Demand will mean you will be able to order the GEA-FTTP 330/30Mbit/s product variant for your customers who are within an FTTC exchange area and are served by an FTTC enabled cabinet.

CPs can take part in either phase or both phases of the pilot. Phase 1 started on 26 July 2012 and continue until phase 2 which we anticipate will begin in March 2013 and complete in May 2013.

We're carrying out the trial in two phases, for phase 1, of the pilot you will need to be able to raise GEA-FTTP 330 Mbit/s orders, and to participate in phase 2 you will also need to consume EMP R2100 because of the system automation.

In response to an FTTP on Demand order we will survey, plan and build the FTTP network to the individual residential or business premise.

This is a good opportunity for end users in FTTC only areas to experience the speeds capable from FTTP.
MDUs and MOU

We recommend that you discuss the property type with the end customer to establish whether their premise is an MDU (apartment block) or MOU (multi occupancy business premise) prior to the order being raised. Any orders received for MDUs or MOUs (with the exception of The Paintworks in Bristol) will be rejected.

Full terms and conditions will be provided.

If you want more information on FTTP on Demand and the pilot, download our fact sheet under the Literature section or please contact your SRM.

This may be the best news I've seen from BT in a while :D

They're going to roll out FTTP to any property within a FTTC enabled area, with an initial offering of 330Mb down, 30Mb up. Obviously this could increase and the distance to the cabinet would no longer matter.

I'll be ordering this day one if its under £80 a month.

£1.5k is reasonable value for money for people who've never had a reliable connection that could potentially offer 1Gb. I paid £500 for a wireless point to point service install and whilst that gives me 25/25 it's prone to signal issues now and again.

According to the checker I can get Infinity option 3 160Mb, so I'm trying to get my order amended :)

It's mental to think this is coming to our exchange, considering they were giving an estimate of 31/03/2013 for FTTC! We were literally talking about broadband at work on Tuesday and I checked their website using my details and almost fell off my chair when I saw the option to order.

Now I feel silly not to have just ordered the top package :( in my defence, if it was clearly labelled as FTTP I'd have jumped on it.

Will report back once it's all sorted.

Just decided to upgrade to the new "unlimited" Infinity option 2. Everything has gone through but I think I might have done something wrong. Option 2 is £26 p/m and then I added the unlimited calls 24/7 option for an extra £5 or so, but I've only just realized I was getting the unlimited calls 24/7 with the previous Infinity Plan I was on for £26 p/m, or has the price gone up for this?

I will be ordering it too as I am finishing off my house build and I'm getting ready to install a phone line now. Will leave it in such a way that the fibre will be easy to put in.

I did the same. Had a 50mm duct sunk in the slab which pops up under the stairs. Getting the fibre put in should be a walk in the park as it can travel all the way inside.

We also jointed just outside the slab, should they refuse to terminate inside (they originally wanted to put an external NTE point outside), so they'd have to lift the patio slabs, dig down and put a "T" on it, if they insist on going external.

Neither way is difficult by any means but I'm hoping they'll go straight in mine :)

FTTP INSTALL levels:

Level 1: Installing Distribution Point at street level and blowing in fibre to node (eta 1week to 2 months depending on location and distance and problems and excess engineering issues)
Level 2: Installing external ONT (optical network termination) to premises
Level 3: Your 8-1 1-5 appointment slot for a guy to come in and do the finished fit

Or that's the idea at the moment

There must be some nasty noise on my household wiring!!! I really need to plug direct into my HH3, these Homeplugs (TP-Link) are sucking 16Mb from my Download speed!! I get 66meg if I connect direct, but hover around 50meg using my household wiring!!

I've got some Cat6 and a couple of connectors (including borrowing a crimp tool) on 'Mates Rates' order from my Brother-in-Law for next week!!

Does that mean only:
High Wycombe
Bristol South
Edinburgh Waverley
St Agnes
Manchester Central
Basingstoke
Watford
Cardiff Stadium

can participate in this FTTP trial?
