BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I've probably asked this before however I'm thinking about definitely changing over to BT Infinity and have been quoted 23.3 down 5.6 up. It's my understanding that this is the absolute minimum my speed will be.

Would it be worth me even getting the 76meg package?

Sounds like you are quite far from the cab like me
Would you mind posting your router stats and distance from the cab please.would give me a guesstimate of what i may get next year possibly :)

Router stats from an ADSL connection will tell you nothing. There's no link between them, and the distance to the cabinet.

Your VDSL speed will depend on the distance to the cabinet.

ADSL router stats are a result of the entire path back to the exchange. For ADSL the distance to the cabinet is irrelevant. Comparing ADSL router stats will tell you nothing, even if the distance to the cabinet is the same.

Ahhh gotcha :)
But my question about his distance to the cab .Would this give me `some` indication of possible speed or not:o
Ninja edit: Is there a maximum distance that fibre won`t work beyond?like my 2 miles from the cab?

Distance to the cabinet will certainly give you some idea of the potential speed. There are other factors, but distance is the most important.

Google 'vdsl distance speed' and you'll find some graphs that'll give some indication of potential speed vs distance.

My exchange is now accepting orders as of today, cabinets been installed since May time yet I still can't order FTTC. Any idea how long until I'm likely to be able to order FTTC? Is there a delay period for availability to role out to providers?

What does the BT wholesale checker say?
Have you emailed nga.enquiries?

any one else getting really really bad performance with their fibre? since day 1 i have been on a 75mb profile, getting full speeds, download speeds around 8+mbps right now doing speed tests i am only getting a few kbp's, heres what the bt whole sale checker says:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 2.71 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-58.07 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 58.07 Mbps

been like this for around 2 weeks now, been downgraded to 58.07 profile too :s

I asked a similar question a while ago.

When I was comparing ISPs BT's website would offer me all their packages. I could get their unlimited 'up to 38Mb' and 'up to 76Mb' deals. My speeds have been estimated at around 40Mb, so I didn't think it was worth paying the extra couple of quid pm for the 76Mb. However, the Home Hub 5 with wireless ac was only offered on the 76Mb tariff and I wanted it. So I had a decision to make...

When I finally ordered I went via Topcashback and I only got offered the 40Gb limited and 'up to 76Mb' packages. No sign of the slightly cheaper and possibly more appropriate 'up to 38Mb' unlimited tariff. I couldn't understand why, but needed the cashback so placed my order for the 76Mb tariff. With any luck, I'll see slightly faster speeds as compensation. If not, then I'll ask BT if I can downgrade, but expect they'll say no.

However, when I now go to BT's website I find the HH5 is offered on all three Infinity packages. So I don't know if I imagined the whole thing.

It's to allow streaming of stuff in an efficient way so as you've not got multiple streams of the same thing being sent down the isp's pipes. BT vision and youview can use multicast for the channels that are streamed over the net.

So got my hopes up for nothing :(

So at the minute its a useless feature, since most the houses that use the cab have a max downrate of 5meg, not even suitible for YT 720p.

Well it seems bt are heavily throttling my fibre connection, it was perfectly fine this morning, although still on 58mpbs ip profile instead of 75, but as soon as i got home from work i seem to be throttled all the way down to 4mbps max, i have downloaded a lot over the last few weeks so not sure if thats why, well i say a lot probably around 300gb max.
