BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I tried that nga address thing and it took 2 weeks to get an answer back and it was a stock message about difficulty siting the DSLAM cabinet, blah blah, local council, blah blah and rolling the cab off the upgrade list.

However the DSLAM cab is already sited and has been for a little while.

At the bottom of the email there was a poor english sentence which sort of said there was a power problem and that it would hopefully be sorted soon.

It is really annoying you just can't speak with people. I hate the way BTOR hide away from the public and don't seem to be accountable to anyone.

They are accountable to their customers, it just happens to be that you aren't one of their customers. I'm surprised that they even run the enquiry service, it would probably make more sense to put more information in the line checker.

If you get an email back saying that your cabinet isn't economically viable for upgrade then ask [email protected] for a price.

Just been quoted a  £14k + VAT for a cabinet upgrade.

Will let you know how quickly Openreach can build their network out when/if we go ahead.

so my landlord has decided to move back into my house and given me 2 months notice as apparently we are not right for the property but anyway this means I can now move into an infinity enabled area! :)

As much as I would like infinity or similar, I cant ever imagine myself choosing a house based on broadband availability especially "superfast broadband"

If for example I relied on a stable connection to work from home then it may be a minor consideration but only to the point on 8mbit or so.

It wouldn't be my number one priority when picking properties, but it would definitely be a deal breaker - I wouldn't consider moving into a house where I couldn't get at least 20mb down.

You're probably the exception. Fast broadband is a major selling point.

To me it does feature high on the list.
Before we moved into our current property I was using phone numbers of local businesses on the checkers to see what I could get - at the time ADSL Max and I had an estimated 7.5mb - so we moved in.

We're looking to possibly move second half of next year and I wont be moving to somewhere that hasn't at least got Infinity.

Ok, So as you may know ADSL24 has sold themselves to Coms PLC.

So as a pre-emptive move I'm on the lookout for a new ISP.

Whos the ones to look out for these days? Hows BT and Sky? Plusnet?

They are the three i'd consider, Needs to be decent for online gaming and obviously reliable.

BT openreach and their DLM is the most stupidest thing which ruins the speeds for many of its customers. I've started of with 75Mb DL which dropped to 55Mb DL and now its at 44Mb DL. Don't even bother calling them as you will be forwarded to an indian call centre. The cycle continues...

I have bought and move house twice, I have turn down many houses or street even potential viewing if there is no cable or fast connection :D

Just moved from virgin to BT and I am well happy, 6 ping on europe BF4 servers

Just moved into my new place and decided to go with Virgin as they will be going to 152mb next year and 200mb thereafter. Is there anything BT can do to keep up that doesn't require you paying £1000+ to get FTTP?

Vectoring / G.fast will get VDSL up to those sorts of speeds. I'd expect the cost to install FTTPoD to fall as well as it becomes simpler to do.

well just checked availabilty checker again with full address and it appears fibre will allegedley be available next year. Obviously 31st May isn't the real date but it's something.

My exchange has just went to Accepting Orders though no one I know can actually order, my cabinet is erected and has power to it, anyone know the typical time it takes to actually go live from this scenario?

6 months on since the initial install and I still getting great speeds:

I'm on the HH5 (Thought I would have to pay for another home hub having got a HH4 back in June but sent a quick email and the HH5 fee was dropped) ;) Never really had any problems in 6 months (other than powercuts) the HH3 at first was a nightmare to use at times but the HH4 sorted my issues and now the HH5 with the modem built in makes life a lot easier

HH5 Stats:

Connection Information
Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 22:52:18
Downstream: 55.72 Mbps
Upstream: 14.48 Mbps

4. Board version: BT Hub 5A
5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 22:53:11
6. Data rate: 14826 / 57059
7. Maximum data rate: 14752 / 56972
8. Noise margin: 6.0 / 5.6
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 21.2
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 20.4

I can see on my street that the cabinets are being upgraded, ask one of the guys and he said yes for the internet, assuming Fibre lol..Openreach guys. Go on the open reach website and it just states we are a future exchange, not accepting orders yet, the bloke on my street said it would be ready within a month....how long from your street being dug up did it take to you being able to make an order?...3mb currently isn't cutting it :P

"xxx mb" doesn't mean anything. Is that down & up or just down?
Virgin Media don't have enough cross-Atlantic bandwidth or at least problems with international routing based on things mentioned here. BT are taking forever to provide Infinity but at least they have decent infrastructure at the national level.

For gaming latency & reliability is all that matters and that is where Virgin Media sucks the most.

Also it's important to remember that you can get lots of different ISPs serving you over Openreach's FTTC product - so you can either pick a budget option or you can decide you want multiple static IP addresses with reverse DNS set properly. With cable you're forced to have whatever Virgin Media want to give you.
