BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Whats the consensus for FTTC products?

My cabinet has just gone live, and it only occurred to me today that BT Infinity is just a retail offering of a service and there's gotta be other providers. I've just had a quick look and it seems that Plusnet, Aquiss etc are all possibilities.

I probably use 100GB a month (I'm on Bethere just now, so they don't keep records - may not be accurate), and that's only going to go up if I can stream TV etc at 80Mbps.

Is infinity the best or are there others to consider?

seems to be a lot of love for Zen.

My exchange has just been enabled went to upgrade to notice Plusnet is £7 more expensive per month for existing customers! Also on an 18 month contract. Think I'll stick with what I've got for the moment :(

Another response off Superfast Cymru, Apparantly my Cab is on the list, they just don't know when they starting work on it.

*Sigh* least I know i'm getting fibre...sometime in the next century.:(

I cant recommend Zen highly enough if they are an option for you. I used to use them when adsl was brand new and while they were a little expensive at the time they were ultra reliable and if they did go down they sorted it very quickly.

My fttb is being installed right now, and apart from the odd hiccup ( like metal girders instead of wood etc) seems to be going ok.

100mb here I come :)

Edit **** router / line installed but site isnt live and wont be for a while ( but hopefully before Xmas)

Stuck on 2mb BT line for a while yet.

This is very frustrating!

According to the BT Infinity site I can't get fibre optic - although according to the address check, both my next-door neighbors can!?!?!

Depends which cabinet your connected too, next door might be on a different one.

Like mine, two doors up they can get fibre but im on a cabinet they won't be upgrading due to "not enough connections to make is viable"

No Fibre for me probably for years to come :(

Annoyingly for me, my house is connected to a metal phone pole right outside next door's house whereas next doors, for some strange reason, actually crosses my wire and is connected to a normal wooden pole further up the road!?!?!?

I'm wondering if it's the metal pole that somehow isn't connected but having checked numbers 26, 27, 27b, 28, 29 and 30 (I'm number 27a) - they can all get it according to the online checker but I can't!?!?!?

I wonder if BT would consider disconnecting me from the metal pole and re-connecting me to the wooden pole, if that is indeed the problem??

The wholesale checker came up with this:

Doesn't seem to mention fibre at all???

Finally getting BT Infinity 2 next Monday now that BT have upgraded the cabinets (only took them 18 months of missed deadlines ).

80Mb Down 24Mb Up all for the same price I already pay monthly :D

If I move from Sky Fibre to Infinity 2 would I notice any speed difference or not as they're using the same lines?

I can't decide between BT Infinity and Plusnet, Biggest concern is BT's customer service being utterly dreadful according to most people. Anyone had issues?

I am with Plusnet and there two benefits over BT. 1. Support is UK based and 2. You won't have to give away a portion of your bandwith to people connecting via the BT FON part of your router.

It's FTTP on Demand, basically it gives you the option of paying the install cost to get a fibre pulled to your house. BT aren't offering it as a retail product.

You do know that BTFON can be turned off, right?

Or better yet. Used a better router of your own

BT Infinity 2 question for anyone who knows please:

Do I need to run a Cat 6 cable if I want to move the BT Home Hub 5. I already have a modem extension cable at the max length of 10 m but also want to reposition the BT HH5 next to it so I presume I just need a decent Cat 6 cable to run from the BT master socket ?

Quick answer please its important, called bt to cancel and they offered me:
27 monthly and
£141 payment for line rental (12 months I think)
tv package from 7.50 monthly + 35 one off.
Includes unlimited calls to 0845 - 0800 anytime etc

They said that I was on an old BT Infinity unlimited package and when asked about quality of service I said I was disapointed in their trafic management / p2p etc.

They said if I renwed they have a new package that has no traffici limitation caps or sharing or slowdown etc.

Was this just bull to get a sale or is this correct? would actually consider staying at the above price.
