BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

OK so I know which exchange and cabinet I am connected to, but cannot find it anywhere having walked/driven around and looked on Google maps. Is there any way of finding the location over the net?

The exchange is LCBUR and it's cabinet 87

estimated availability date for FTTC 31 Dec 13.

What's the speed estimate?

This will give you an idea of the distance from cab.

Outside McDonalds on Trafalgar street.

I'm about to leave BT, sick of their customer service and going to switch to Talk Talk Fibre for 12 months at
£17.50
£126 line rental
£336 and then receive £42 cashback.

Is there anything to take advantage of while I'm still with BT such as their cloud storage or their internet setup?

May as well gain the most benefits possible while I transition over.

Anyone got experience with talktalk? Dont care about customer service as BT is just as bad, its fibre and 76/20 so assume it will work just as good as BT

Just a quick one, do these stats look ok?

6. Data rate: 19999 / 56164
7. Maximum data rate: 23957 / 65392
8. Noise margin: 14.9 / 6.2
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 4.4
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 4.4

I have a very low DS attenuation and I can see the cab from my window but my SNR seems quite low.

I'm curious about this too since my Infinity 2 contract is up on 04 Jan. Don't forget though that a TalkTalk fibre contract is 18 months, not 12.

Did you see that PlusNet currently has £120 cashback at Quidco?

EDIT: I just did the maths, and over 18 months (if you take the initial line rental saver), it works out to £25.82/month after the cashback. That's £16/month less than I'm currently paying for Infinity 2!

I seen the plusnet topcashback deal earlier this month and they even had a reduced price but I missed the boat, they also have p2p and traffic shaping management which talk talk and BT dont ahve on their new packages

Ah, fair enough. I didn't realise that TalkTalk had dropped their traffic shaping.

Over 18 months, TalkTalk (with £40.40 cashback) is £27.39/month compared to PlusNet at £25.82/month.

Food for thought...

Just read the talk talk forums and probably going to avoid in all likelihood. It doesnt seem like they have the best feedback but i suppose you will get nothing but problems on a forum for broadband. Either way its not worth the saving to try out.

Think I am going to bite the bullet and stat with BT and take Infinity 2 for
£22.65 for 12 months and
£141 line rental

Edit - I Dont like the idea of paying for a top package with plusnet to be traffic shaped. However they are completely open and honest about it

Could you elaborate on the traffic shaping please Lighters? I'm with TalkTalk myself and we'll be getting their fiber upgraded whenever it comes to our area. Are they bad with traffic shaping? Thought you could turn it off if you ring them/use their support forums.

Did BT offer you a Home Hub 5 as part of that renewal?

Not as far as I'm aware. Going to call them today and ask for it. May see what cheaper deals they have on the 40 10 as that's fast enough with hh5

They offered me this to stay on Infinity 2:

Without HH5: £22.65 x 12 = £141 line saver rental = £412.80 = £34.40/month

With HH5: £26/month x 12 + £141 line saver = £453 = £37.75/month

Decisions, decisions.

Is the hh5 even that much better or going to make a difference?

I have the Home Hub 3, and despite what people may say about it, it has performed flawlessly for me. It's basic and the user interface is annoying at times, but it has never let me down.

I would like the Home Hub 5 for 2 reasons:

* Gigabit ethernet ports. Copying to my HTPC at 11.2MB/sec with the HH3 is doing my head in.
* A single device, ie. no modem needed.

I think I'm going to renew with BT and get the HH5. I hate to say it, but they are the best ISP for FTTC.

Hmm may try kick up a fuss over the phone then and see what I can get. I mean they have said they would arrange a callback on more than 3 occasions and nothing has been actioned.
