BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT Openreach Hike the Price of Already Expensive 330Mbps Fibre on Demand

* The monthly rental charge for the first three years will be increased to £99 per month (from the current £38 per month).

* The current one-off fixed connection charge will be increased to £750 (from the current £500).

* And the current one-off distance based charge (which varies according to the distance between the fibre aggregation node and the customer premise) will be increased to £3.50 per metre (from the current £2 per metre).

* As a result, we estimate that more than half of premises will face a total connection charge of between £1,100 and £2,500 (these premises would have incurred a total connection charge of between £700 and £1,500 under the original pricing).

I believe that current FTTP does not run to the fibre aggregation node, just the closest FTTC enable cabinet.

So if you live in an area that currently doesn't have FTTC or you local cabinet isn't FTTC enable you can get Fibre on Demand!

I wouldn't mind paying the above charges to get 330Mbps ;) That said if I could get FTTC then I wouldn't bother with Fibre on Demand.

Ouch at the new FTTP prices.

I was strongly considering it when fibre comes to my area, but those monthly prices are now too eye-watering for me.

Perhaps this has been designed to move FTTP out of the reach of the majority of domestic customers?

I can sort of understand the build costs going up if they've been digging holes and realised that it's costing a lot more than they anticipated, but I really don't understand the monthly rental costs going up almost three fold, and an extra 50% on the connecting part of the charge.

I have finally decided to give VM the boot and signed up to BT, is there anything I need to be aware of or need to do as a new customer?

No & no.

Erm, yes & yes!

I asked:-

Ah OK, I thought Fiber on Demand ran to the 'NGA Aggregation Node' rather than the cabinet, the construction charges applied were dependent on how far your house was from this Node?

response.

Engineering wise that's true but as the aggregation points are typically within 50m of the cabinet and we need a simplistic systems solution on availability, our current plans sell fibre on demand in FTTC areas only.

What's the difference between FTTP and FTTPoD, aren't they one in the same product?

Either way you need to be in a FTTC area to get them.

They have shove £99pcm over 3 years

Hopefully by the time it comes here, they'll think of reducing it or I may have to cancel Sky :o:(

Aggregation points are not typically within 50 metres of all cabinets. These aggregation points, as the name suggests, aggregate together multiple cabinets so unless all the cabinets that node serves are very close to each other most of them are going to be considerably further than 50m from the node.

There's about 800m of fibre between the cabinet serving me and the aggregation node, not surprising given that node aggregates together a few cabinets and that's the first common point between them all on the duct network.

The cheapest FTTPoD service I'm aware of, with the current pricing, is 120GBP/month.

With this increase that'll go up to 190GBP/month as a minimum, assuming that the increase is passed on in full.

Ouch.

Just got Plusnet installed today

Not bad. Better than my estimates of 23/6.

How come my IP profile is set to 38 though? I'm paying for 76Mb and obviously I don't expect to get that, but is it possible I could get a bit more if my profile was set higher as I'm pretty much maxing it out right now?

Also, my router doesn't show my sync speed. How can I see that on a Technicolor TG582n?

Yep but BT aren't going to fibre to the aggregation point for FTTPoD, just to the cabinet, as per my previous post.

True if they are going to run to the aggregation point but as above they are going to the closet FTTC cabinet then it needs to be in a FTTC area

Where the estimate is less than 40Mb Plusnet will order the 40Mb down, 10Mb up product from BT Wholesale, hence the 38.72Mb IP profile you're seeing.

It's possible you'd get a bit more for now however you're extremely likely to see that bit more disappear as more people are connected to your cabinet and the interference between lines increases.

You cannot see the sync speed on the Technicolor, it is not a VDSL modem and has no visibility of anything on the VDSL layer. All of that is done by the Openreach branded modem the Technicolor is connected to.

Depending on the type of modem you have there if it's a Huawei HG612 you can fairly easily unlock it to see your sync speed, if it's an ECI it gets far more difficult.

The cab isn't involved. It looks something like this:

FTTP is not the same as FTTPoD.
