BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just ordered 80meg Infinity, swopping from SKY. £100 quid Quidco cashback and £100 Sainsburys Gift Card included, not too shabby I suppose.

+1

The Quidco and Sainsburys CB clinched it for me. As well as free installation and the decent HH5.

Estimated 80 down and 20 up. Chingford.

Just taken advantage of my FTTP connection and upgraded to the 220mb service, downloading at 24.6mb/s is rather nice. Shame my powerlines don't work too well with it. Looks like I need to move to a hardwired connection.

Are you fttp or fttpod?

Are the HH5 stats/maximum data rates inaccurate or bugged?

As mine simply seem to be made up or just completely inaccurate.

I get max upload, SNR there hovers around 14. Yet the maximum data rate fluctuates wildly from 21XXX to 26XXX without change to the snr.

Downstream I sync at 74XXX. SNR is stable at 6, yet the max downstream always claims 72XXX.

Connection drops or modem is rebooted (like other day when I had to change rj11), then it will sync at 74XXX as expected, max data rate will then decide 74XXX is my max, before eventually claiming max with 72XXX.

Same when I first I got it. Used to sync at 76XXX give or take, max data rate would always claim 75XXX.

So is it just made up or something? As if the target is 6SNR and you have it at your current speed, then max data rate should be displayed as around that? Surely the max data rate should only show lower if you SNR is less than the target of 6 at your current speed.

Not really a problem, doesn't effect the connection, just seems a little odd.

my ping on speedtest.net seems a lot lower than with VM

averaging 5-6 but yesterday at one point was indicating 2ms

and I'm on Wireless via USB dongle atm - was getting higher pings on VM and I was on CAT5 hard-wired to router

Does anyone know why occasionally the the connection timer on the HH5 seems to reset even though it doesn't lose sync. It done it tonight. Connection had been up for around 10 days give or take. Now timer says 2 hours.

At the time it reset the WAN log says

Yet it did not actually disconnect

I know it stayed connected as:

Modem light stayed blue, light flashes orange if sync is lost and it needs to reconnect.
When it has lost sync in the past, it takes more than 14 seconds to reconnect.
Connection speed is exactly as it was before it reset. Before reset
74588
After reset
74588

If it had actually disconnected, I would have expected it to change, even if it was just a few k as it has done in the past.

Also I was playing online and there was no interruption to the game and steam didn't go offline.

Quick search shows

https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infi...er-request/m-p/1169728/highlight/true#M127684

Saying generic message for fault on connection somewhere. This is only the 2nd time it's done it (reset with no loss of sync) in the little over 2 months I had it.

So possible no loss of sync to cab? (hence no speed change), but error further down the network somewhere?, but then no disconnect from the game I was playing (not even a lag spike)

Thanks.

After over 9 years of being stuck on a 3mb connection, yesterday I was finally able to order BT Infinity 2. Engineer arrives in a week to install it.

I'm just wondering, how do my estimated speeds stack up ? Are they average, below or above average.

Thanks.

BTOR currently only offer 80/20 as a max so I'd expect you are pretty close to the cabinet. Speeds drop off after a few hundred metres, first with the upload and then gradually as the line gets longer with the download, before it drops off a cliff towards ADSL2+ speeds.

It is sometimes said that BTOR are conservative with their estimates and many find their speeds are slightly faster. You will not see faster speeds as it's as fast as the product goes. Maybe down the road when they stretch the speed again it might be higher than 80, who knows.

Just had mine installed today

getting less impressed with the dynamic re-negotiating

started off on day of install at 51/11 ish

each day drops further

now down to 41/10 !!

I may be calling them to switch to Infinity 1 at this rate as I'm not paying extra for no extra speed - my line speed was estimated at 35-50
