BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

these are my logs - what does Max Data Rates mean please ?

VDSL Line Status

Connection Information

Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 02:56:55
Downstream: 41.23 Mbps
Upstream: 9.962 Mbps

7. Maximum data rate: 13602 / 49589
8. Noise margin: 6.1 / 5.6
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 21.2
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 20.5

the odd thing is the Noise Margin seems to be same now as it was at 50mb connected speed - so that implies to me its no more or less stable at 41 mb as it was at 51 ?

Guys, I've just got my MAC from Sky and was thinking about jumping ship to BT. Currently on a d/l speed of @16 mb but my exchange is showing an FTTC RFS date on the postcode checker of 'May 2014'. I intend calling them up to see if they can elaborate on that but what is it likely to mean? Would I be as well using my MAC now and signing up with BT for broadband and then swapping over to FTTC once its available or could that be a hassle?

Also, as a new customer moving from Sky can I expect any nice sweetener deals from BT?

Women!!!!

Hmmm. Went on their live chat system this afternoon and asked if they could do me any special deal as an O2/Sky customer jumping ship. Was offered 12 months on their top 'Unlimited' broadband package for £8 per month for 12 months. Guy said they would waive the delivery cost for the Home Hub 4 and that once my exchange was FTTC ready I could upgrade at no extra cost. The order online thing looks fine to me but the missus is insisting that she phone them to order it as she wants to try and get a better all round package including our current phone line and call package. I explained to her that in that case we'd miss out on the £25 Sainsbury's voucher and the Topcashback offer but she is as usual, being stubborn and stupid about it. The annoying thing is that BT won't speak to me on the phone as she is the named account holder. She knows nadda about PC's, broadband etc so we'll probably end up on what she thinks is a fantastic package but in reality will be their 10Gb per month limited one.

That said, ordering via the online system they aren't going to know its really me sat at the keyboard now, are they? ;)

Tell her to run and jump then? Keep some of your man hood and don't let the missus take control of the internet!!

Oh but I will be.

Just reading through the Topcashback thing, so I don't get anything wrong there as it seems to me there are a load of T&C's in there you could easily trip up on and lose out on the cash. So I assume you get cashback paid directly into your bank account in one lump if you click through their website to order the BT BB?

Yes, make sure you clear your cookies before logging in to TCB and clicking through to BT, to ensure it tracks your order.

Just noticed that my Home Hub 5 (Type A) received at firmware update a few days ago:

Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.173.1.6 | Last updated 05/05/14

Anyone know what the changes are?

Cabinet was finally put in about 3 weeks ago. Ordered Infinity 2 about 2 weeks ago. Got a Kelly contractor who came to install it (slightly worried when I saw wasn't Openreach). But all working, and getting fairly good stats.

5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 01:20:39
6. Data rate: 19999 / 79995
7. Maximum data rate: 43648 / 95713
8. Noise margin: 23.5 / 10.3
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 15.0
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 15.0

Considering the scare stories I've been hearing (with contractors botching jobs and other stories), really happy with the result. :)

Forgot connection stats:

Downstream: 78.12 Mbps
Upstream: 19.53 Mbps

getting closer to the 'holding date' of 31/5/2014. No idea where my cab is though. Not seen any roadworks nearby :(

All the info I have for my exchange says is 'RFS (Ready for Service) Date - May 2014'. Is that the same as a 'holding date'?

Also, quick question on Home Hubs. Is the HH4 the default router for 'normal' broadband customers to receive when signing up with BT at the moment and the HH5 the one you get if you are signing up for FTTC?

Lartyconshayo,

Check the BT "where and when" site first to try and locate your cabinet and exchange. Then check the .gov roadworks for your area, normally can find out when your cabinet is incoming when the .gov site shows roadworks being done by BT and it's in the area marked for your cabinet.

R0Z4G,

Not 100% certain, but it can be anywhere from a week (central London) to the last date on the wholesale date that says when it'll be available. If you know where the cabinet is, my recommendation is not to go by and hear if there are fans running etc, as the one local to me is a newer type and can't hear a damn thing going by it, almost as if there's nothing active within it. But once you have the cabinet, just keep checking every weekend on their systems if you can get it. My own cabinet listed me until end of the year, but I kept on checking every 2 days as I simply couldn't wait to get stuff sorted besides getting Infinity.

For Home Hub 4 and 5. Yes. Home Hub 4 has the standard ADSL modem portion built in and would be the one offered to normal Broadband users. Home Hub 5 is the one with the VDSL built in, so (I think, don't quote me on this one) it would be worthless to the non Infinity users (Broadband only and not Infinity that uses VDSL) who sign up.

Did a double check, it appears that Home Hub 5 is a dual adsl/vdsl unit. So any new users will get the HH5 it appears.
