BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

R0Z4G,

Think it's partly based on location as well, but keep checking every weekend for now if the cabinet is already in and the exchange is live. As said, it can come up at any point once both exchange and cabinet are both in and running.

these are my logs - what does Max Data Rates mean please ?

VDSL Line Status

Connection Information

Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 02:56:55
Downstream: 41.23 Mbps
Upstream: 9.962 Mbps

7. Maximum data rate: 13602 / 49589
8. Noise margin: 6.1 / 5.6
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 21.2
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 20.5

the odd thing is the Noise Margin seems to be same now as it was at 50mb connected speed - so that implies to me its no more or less stable at 41 mb as it was at 51 ?

you missed off "6. Data rate:", anyway, max rate is what it should/could sync at if you were to re-sync. i would re-sync at sunrise to 8am for the best speed

Ofcom has also confirmed that it expects Openreach to cut this wholesale migration fee for superfast broadband (FTTC) lines from £50 to £11 +vat, which would make it cheaper to switch ISPs. On top of that the minimum contract period for FTTC lines would be cut from 12 months to 1 month, although this would only apply to existing FTTC subscribers that migrate to another FTTC ISP (i.e. not first-time customers). We wouldn’t be surprised to see this causing some confusion for consumers, depending upon how ISPs market the change.

I am about to move house to an area without infinity yet. The checker keeps saying "Sorry your cabinet is temporarily unavailable, capacity will be restored as soon as possible." and the date keeps moving. It was listed for May 28th, then a week ago June 11th, and today says June 18th. Anyone had this trouble? Am I likely to get infinity by the end of the summer? :-/

Is the HH4 pretty stable now? I started using the white modem with it again as the inbuilt one would drop out.

It seems stable but I can't say I'm happy with the wireless signal, seems quite a bit weaker than the Airport Extreme it replaced.

Mine sits in the hallway and in the kitchen this netbook wont get above 8mb download anymore on wireless. A few months ago it was fine and then bam 8mb down limit and a laughable 15mb upload allowed!?!

It is still like that i think HH4 is a peice of crap. BT are sending me letters now too as my contracts coming up. I got offered a quid or two off per month. Yea when new customers get homehubs modems and a £100 voucher im going to renew. If anything i will go Zen and come back next year for the voucher again :D

Hmmm, I'm fairly impressed got a text at 6.30am to say my switchover from Sky was done.

I'm using the Openreach Modem with my N66U instead of the Homehub 5 I was sent. My initial download speeds are 63Mb with 19Mb Upload, any tips to improve this or can I expect it to drop over the next few days? My ping to BBC.co.uk is slightly higher at 15ms over 10-11ms with Sky, can I expect this to drop?

I've alreay set MTU and MRU to 1500 in the N66U as BT supports this over PPPoE.

Had a listen to the fibre cabinet at my dads area and still no sound of any fans yet!

For some reason, not all cabinets have fans running. The one I'm connected to has never had any noise coming from it at all, there are some others over where my father is at as well that also has no fans running. Leaving me to believe originally I had to wait until Dec 2014 to get it. Turns out that it is live and working and I'm connected right now through it.

There are a few cabinets local around me that were installed years ago that do have fans running. But again, the one I'm on is not. Don't know the exact reason why. *shrugs*

:: edit ::

I'm aware that normally cabinets will have fans and the hum from them being generated, I'm just saying that the newer units I've been listening to are newly installed and known to be connected (someone I know has Inifnity via said cabinet unit) and for some reason not using the fans to a stage where you can hear them. Either from not enough heat being generated or fans being set to really low levels most likely. But new cabinets may not be producing lots of noise that you can detect that it's live from noise alone.

So basically I just got my fibre installed today and set up my Asus RT-N66U and I've got from 2meg down to a whopping 44meg!!

And that's before it's even stabalised :D :D :D

Edit* 73meg down :p
