BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Advice needed.

I've been suffering major issues with TalkTalk Fibre in the evenings with bandwidth dropping to 2Mbps and pings averaging 250ms. This has been happening for around 2 months so far, silly of me really but I only reported it 3 weeks ago. After much investigation on their behalf they've identified a fault at the exchange which they've said will is due to be fixed at the end of September. I really can't put up with this for another two months, do I have grounds to cancel without penalty?

When it comes to DSL all the latest T's and C's say is that we can't guarantee your own Router will work. We won't supply the details required nor help you set it up or troubleshoot any issues you have with a non sky Router connected. Basically keep the Sky Router to hand and if you have any problems you can swap it. Also handy as another Router can help with troubleshooting anyway.

Fibre explicitly says you must not use non Sky supplied equipment with Sky Fibre though.

Found the information here helpful but confusing at times to achieving a good connection.

Some months ago my ISP had a look at my fibre line and didn't see any issues and some of you had success with new hardware, maybe I need a to treat myself to a new router too but what are the top ones to check out?

Prepared to buy one soon because my lines keep slowing down every 2-3 days and need to reset the router+modem to get speeds and ping back gets very tiresome. Otherwise buffering for streaming is hell. It can go to 20ms when usually I get 11ms and speeds drop 39.2Mb/s > 24Mb/s and upload is rock solid 9.4MB/s.

If you have a separate modem already then the ASUS RT-N66U is a very good all round router.

Yes, I've got the BT modem. Checked the latest BIOS date on this old-2012 router and very happy to see it's still bang up-to-date (22nd July 2015), currently on version 3.0.0.4.378.7410.

Don't have anything that uses AC for that other version and this ones looks to do what you need as you said, thanks may as well order this :)

The AC66U is only £4 more on the rainforest. Is there any reason not to got for that instead?

I did consider it. Had already ordered it last night and went for non-AC because I have nothing that uses AC. Everything looks great about the non-AC router.

Current router is good enough for general use on phones/tablets, AVR is hooked to media server via gig ethernet with unmanaged gig switches on either end. Want to do more at once across the household when I get the RT-N66U :)

Connected today and a quick speedtest suggests 29.0 Mb/s down and 8.9 Mb/s up. Coming from about 6 down 1 up it's a nice improvement!

Also noticed ping times are much-reduced. Browsing feels very snappy and my VNC into work is much smoother. Edit - incredibly smooth actually. Very nearly like sitting at the machine.

Very pleased so far!

Silly questions but.

If you have x speed calculated that you would likely achieve, would it be better to fully utilize a slightly smaller amount 38 Mbps for less price?

Or is there some nasty tactic of preference given to the higher speed?

This was my logic. I've recently signed up. Predicted speed was 22-32mb so it didn't seem like there was much point going for the 80mb option.

Just a little bump on this.

I spoke to customer services who said it can't be brought forward and have knocked £15 of my bill. Still doesn't leave me with usable broadband though. Down from 80Mbps to 1.5 - 2.0Mbps is appalling.

Don't have Talk Talk, but a few things to check

1) Do a speedtest, what are you getting?
2) Make sure you're on a wired connection when testing
3) See if you can get access to your sync stats, then at least you can see what you're syncing at vs actually getting.

I've done at all and provided it to TalkTalk. I'm not after technical advice here, I know it's an issue at the excahnge, I'm after more legal advice. Since they've said it'll take two months to fix, can I leave my contract without penalty? TalkTalk kept advoiding the question saying it's BT's equipment so not their fault.

I'm moving to a new house and want to sign up for infinity. There's no sale on at the moment but topcashback are offering £170 plus a £120 sainsburys voucher. Monthly cost is circa £50. If I wait for the next sale, what can expect in terms of a monthly saving, is it worth waiting for or should I take the cashback?

Only 5 days in and had a problem this morning.

Woke up to an orange light on the hub. Called the automated line to check for network problems - not in our area. Power cycled, and later reset - nope. Called customer services as soon as they opened (8 AM) and the (very helpful) lady ran a load of diagnostics - inconclusive. Booked a visit for Thursday morning.

Out of the blue an "engineer" called at lunchtime and I went home to meet him. He'd narrowed it down to the wiring at the property but still couldn't find a problem. We went inside, power cycled the hub, and it was fine.

Hope this doesn't become a regular thing!

Yes. ISP bundled; big difference. Check the reviews on Amazon: half are great, half are one star. That's crap.

It is crap and known for dropping the connection which on VDSL means that DLM will hammer your connection as unstable! The router in it is certainly decent (though limited in options, and port forwarding will forever be broken) but the modem is appalling!

Imo, in an age where we have DLM and still run fibre over copper, you should never use an integrated unit. Separation of modem and router allows for rebooting without destroying your link sync rate accidentally.

Interesting. It turns out we have one of the old white modems already in the house left behind from a previous customer ("engineer" identified it, I didn't know what it was, said they only just stopped using them a couple of months ago). Should I try it out or just leave it be?

I'm live!

Randomly got maximum sync today.

Had infinity for around 15 months. From day one synced at around 74000, g.inp got stuck on and got 77000 and that was that. Quite high takeup of infinity here and I was late to the cab, so assumed crosstalk (others online with similar stats got max sync).

HG612 randomly decided to resync and grabbed max

Max: Upstream rate = 27452 Kbps, Downstream rate = 79772 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 19999 Kbps, Downstream rate = 80000 Kbps

Wonder why it jumped up and if it will last.
