BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Does http://31.55.184.248 work? It maybe your DNS settings, If that works then try setting dns to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to test.

And as for pings im currently pinging bbc.co.uk from northwest at 16-19ms.

Hi, that link doesn't work, either before or after changing my dns. I'm presuming the only place I have to change them is in Internet Protocol Version 4 properties of each network adaptor?

It only seems to be HTTPS addresses that don't load. For example, royalmail.com loads fine, when but when trying to access a secure part of the site, it just times out?

Check that your web browser isn't set to use a proxy for https sites.

Also, what happens if you open a command prompt and do 'telnet www.royalmail.com 443'? Do you get any response or does the connection fail?

C:\Users\Ian>telnet www.royalmail.com 443
'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Not using any proxies. I'm having the same problem in both Internet Explorer and Chrome. Was moved from Sky ADSL to Infinity yesterday. Have had no problems until yesterday when the moved occured?

Ah, you'll need to install the telnet client to get that command working.

Can you grab a copy of Firefox (even Firefox portable if you don't want to install it) and see if that helps.

It might be worth dropping the MTU a bit though 1488 should be fine. I'm using 1492 and have no issues.

Is it just one PC that's having problems? Can phones on the same network get to https sites? It might be worth trying to boot the PC from a live Linux distro (so it'll run but not install on the hard drive, leaving Windows untouched) and seeing it that works.

Phone had no issues, so guessed it was the PC. A Windows reinstall has now solved the problem, was overdue anyway :(

Have gone from this:

Infinity 1 was a decent upgrade!

I can't wait for BT to roll out the G.INP to my cabinet, still sitting on a whopping 10mb / 0.5mb fibre connection. Incredibly frustrating when my client the next road over is on a different cab and can get 76mb. I'd be happy to get 20mb/1mb but a house with 4 people in it using the internet constantly its literally painful.

G.INP got me an extra 9Mbps or so on the downstream.

A month or so after that went on my sync rate increased to 79,999 with a downstream SNR of about 2.5dB and it was rock solid. I powered down the modem and router to move them and since then (about 3 weeks ago) the sync rate has been back down to about 70,000 - what it was after G.INP was enabled.

Is there a simple way to get sync speed reset yet? Used to sync at 80mbps for over a year but the last few months it's dropped to 60mbps.

No. DLM can be reset but only by an engineer at the cabinet and good luck getting your ISP to do that without good cause. (And losing 20Meg is unlikely to be seen as 'good cause' if your estimated speed was around or below 60)

I've switched from Sky broadband to BT Infinity and I've not been able to connect at all since the line was activated on Friday. They're sending an engineer out on Tuesday but does anyone have any ideas?

The Sky broadband worked without issue so I'm not sure what's going on. Using a HH5.

This is called the Openreach effect, 9 times out of 10 they screw up switch overs and only connect the phone and not the internet.
