BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

ordered infinity last week (wasnt paying £45 for an engineer to come out to plug it in)

yesterday an engineer turned up saying my order was a dead order (something had gone wrong with my line and he was there to fix it)

i asked him if he had a filtered nte5 faceplate and some cable so i could move my master socket. He gave me his drill and said if you drill the hole ill sort it out for ya. result.

he managed to sort everything and went away leaving me 40mb down/10mb up, happy days.

I ordered Infinity 1 last night, and now the order tracker says this:

We're sorry, your order has not progressed as expected

We are aware of the problem and a specialist team is working on it. We will be in contact as soon as we have further news. If you would prefer you can contact us.

*sigh* I can't wait to find out what this means.

Haha, exact same thing happened to me with the tracking, raise a claim with Quidco! I had to do that with something else as well - might have something to do with blocking some cookies.

So I've been seriously thinking about upgrading to fibre now that my area is accepting orders again. Was just curious about the whole process though. What's actually involved after placing the order (between sky, bt and plusnet atm for differing reasons)? I already have bt broadband (was on the old yahoo scheme back in the day and now paying far too much for option 3 which is 5 meg broadband unlimited at £36!) on my own line. Will it be fairly straight forward to sort out?

its a very straightforward process. It's only matter of switching routers once they activate your line.

Thanks.

Just to clarify something though. Does someone need to be in the house for an engineer at any time during the process? Or is it just a case of ordering it, plugging in the router they send and then just wait for the day of activation?

Thanks

i think its only plusnet that require then to actually visit the house as they bring you a modem.

I should have Infinity 3 (FTTP) being installed on Friday - only five weeks late.

Currently my master socket is to the right of my front door. It's the other side of the wall from where the BT line comes in to the house. Unfortunately it's on the wrong side of the door - the power sockets and space for router, modem etc is on the left. The external Infinity box has been mounted on the right as well, which is logical I suppose. What's the standard procedure for running the fibre in to the house? Will it be a case of drilling through wherever they fancy and tacking the cable internally to wherever it needs to go? How neat are these guys, is it a case of 'depends on the engineer'?

Fingers crossed you don't endure the pain that I have as I am now 7 months without Internet as BT seem unable to turn our FTTP on in our flat.

I do however have an ONT installed well away from our master socket for when BT sort the mysterious routing issues so can tell you my experience of that bit. They basically run a bit of fibre internally to wherever you want the ONT and battery pack located(ours is behind the TV). The fibre is white and they will tack it along the skirting boards albeit they don't used painted tacks, so it's not he most visually appealing job. They will drill through walls between rooms etc to get the fibre to where you want it. It's not the neatest work I've seen but it's ok, but I think that's all BT really aim for!

You don't need to be anywhere near the master socket for FTTP. In fact mine is gone now and it's VoIP through the fibre. They will drill through the wall from outside and run the fibre in for you to where you want it. When the guy did mine they said they would put it where you asked within reason. You could probably ask them to run the cable on the outside of the house to the right so they can drill into the house from the correct side.

Enjoy the speed. I'm considering upgrading to the 300Mb option :D

Yep, I've been finding the Wifi to be on the ropey side. I've seen some suggestions of changing the frequency of the band which could help however I've decided to go the wired route instead.
