BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I'm currently using an Asus RT-N66U via a TP Link modem - I bought the Asus as the HH3 I was supplied was terrible. Can I plug it straight in to the new Infinity modem, or will I have to use the HH5?

the root of my problem with the 42mb infinity2 package was found when the engineer came round.

despite the postcode checker saying i can get full speed, the engineer says that my street is wired badly and that rather than pull through from the cabinet and into the road, they went around the long way meaning my line is around 980m long.

so i have dropped down to infinity 1 as I wasnt keen on paying the extra for infinity 2 for 6mb.

bit disappointing really.

installed my ASUS DSL-AC68U and that has really changed the way my LAN works over the homehub. Huge wireless performance increase as well as much more settings accessible. not being able to change the DNS on the homehub is just laughable but understandable really.

I will do a full review when I get time but it really is a solid piece of kit. Very impressed.

My parents are moving to Dorset and this what their line is currently capable of:

Ouch!. Being a geek, I looked out for the street cabinet serving the property and managed to work out it's roughly 1.4km away. There is a new FTTC cabinet next to the old cabinet but it's not available yet. The Superfast Openreach website lists the area as 'enabled area' saying:

Your area is enabled for Superfast Fibre but your cabinet is not ready yet so you can't place an order today. It is in our plans to be upgraded and we update this info weekly, so please check back later."

The Dorsetforyou site lists:

How long do we think before they can order 'fibre'?

Currently I am on ADSL with microfilters using the household extension socket upstairs in the master bedroom. I run a single ethernet cable around the periphery of the floor from the master bedroom to a network switch in the office.

I've ordered 40Mbps PlusNet FTTC and it should be coming mid-November.

I am concerned about the engineer visit. From what I understand from doing some research (googling) is that the engineer will install a new faceplate.

I am concerned this new faceplate will consequently stop me using the household extension socket upstairs? Can anyone confirm this?

If you want your current setup you'll need to ask the engineer to make your current extension socket the master socket (which is where the new faceplate will be installed) and your current master socket will act as an extension.

I'd be interested to know how people got this working too.

My in laws have a homehub5 and its crap in their house (thick stone walls, large house). The engineer left their old infinity modem behind (the white one), and they have an Asus rt56u. I would have thought it would have been simple, connect the modem to the wall socket, then by ethernet to the internet port on the asus router, but it just continually fails to pick up the connection, even though the modem syncs up successfully.

Hi guys, So plugged in my huawei hg612 today and it seems that my speeds have dropped.

Before with the HH5 I was getting 37-39 down 9 up and now i'm only getting 30 down...

Before: FTTC > HH5 > PC
Now: FFTC > HG612 > Linksys WRT1200 > PC

Any idea? Or does it take a while to stabilize?

Guys, bit of advice required please. Finally, my area/exchange has been upgraded to FTTC. On the BT checker it tells me the server cabinet has been upgraded and orders are being accepted. Yay!! :D

However, is there somewhere I can go online to predict or give me an idea of what max speeds I can expect? Reason I'd like to know is I'm unsure whether to sign up to the BT Infinity 1/38Mb or BT Infinity 2/76Mb package?

Thanks for any advice. :)

How long is a piece of fibre? ;)
Where I work, which is the countryside, the fibre cabinet was up for over a year before we could order.
