BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Didn't really want to start a new thread for this so thought I'd ask in here.

I'm currently with a different ISP but using the BTHH5 as its a far better router than the one I received from my ISP, however with most HHs it enables BT Wifi with FON but I'm trying to disable this and everything that I've searched for so far requires me to enter my BT username and password on their website but I don't have one.

Any suggestions?

What exaclty is BT Wifi with FON? I see it popping up on my network list from my HH5 when I scan for wifi networks? I've split my 2.4 and 5Ghz connections on the HH5, stopped them syncing and called them different names. I find that if I'm sat in the garden the 5Ghz is a bit weak to pick up so I decided to separate them both so I can decide which one to connect to. But I also see something called BT Wifi-X as well, what's that?

AFAIK its basically an open network that anyone with a BT account can connect to (as there is a sign in feature and you can also pay I think) so its basically like a hotspot for others.

I've done the same as you as of splitting the networks at its easier to connect to, but sometimes depending on where I am, like you the connection can be poor.

Finally got my line fixed today and stats are currently 58Mb down and 11Mb up. Before the line fault I was getting the full 80/20mb. I'm guessing it will take some time for the line to retrain itself and if so any idea how long it might take?

Cheers

They're a "worldwide" network of WiFi hotspots, composed largely of customer's access points. The idea is you volunteer the spare capacity on your hub in exchange for using anyone else's hub. I write "spare" because they are meant to prioritise the customers traffic over all else.

If you opt out (which is easy on the BT web control panel) you can turn it off, but it means not being able to use anyone else's hotspot either.

I never use WiFi hotspots so I opted out the other day. Still waiting for the hub to switch from "BT Wi-fi Status: Active" though. Might have to web chat if it doesn't sort itself out. (Edit: apparently one needs to allow 28 days. Maybe they only push preferences to the hub on a monthly cycle?)

Today was supposed to be the day my Fibre got connected after booking for an AM engineer visit 2 weeks ago he shows up at gone 5pm, goes off to the cabinet to "swap" the line over to VDSL, comes back plugs a dirty old modem in and it gets no sync so he says the modem must be faulty and he will get another one out to me.

So i tried connected my ADSL router back up after he left and it synced up straight away, yet everything i've read said ADSL will not work on a VDSL line.

Got in touch with plusnet support who say the order hasn't completed yet and that my ADSL will continue working on the line until the order completes, now im pretty sure they are talking rubbish.

Getting TT FTTC being fitted. Currently with Virgin 200mb and 12 upload. Main reason to change is the increase upload and no traffic management, not ordering via my address checker at bt adsl checker I get:

FTTC Range A (Clean) 65.8 45.3 18.7 11.8 -- Available
FTTC Range B (Impacted) 55 32.4

Are these usually spot on or could be more? Just wondering if it's worth it ha

That is usually very conservative, but for that to be an upgrade from VM 200mbit the service from VM must be shocking

would like to remove my HH5 from the loop - as I'm using it along with my trusty Asus 66u - but as both "routers" - I have to use the 66u in "pass-through" mode which disables a lot of features I'd like to use - for instance parental controls

I'd like to set the Asus up so I can kick the kids off their ipads after a certain time at night etc etc - and other parental controls - but with the Asus in pass through you can't use any of those features

what would people recommend please - I've three main options

(1) buy an openreach modem off Ebay

(2) buy a Draytek 130

(3) buy a replacement for both routers, all singing dancing one, R7000 etc ? but concerned that with most of the ones with built in modems, the modem part doesn't often seem to get "great" reviews

The checker predicted I'd get 35 mb D/L and 27.5 Mb D/L impacted. I've found that to be spot on as I get this:-

I too intended to go for Infinity 2 but after using the checker, that would obviously be pointless.

If you perform a factory reset on the HH it'll disable it.

Evening guys.

Just about to move into my first place this week and looking at packages for Fibre. Looks it is between Sky and BT (usual others do not service my area which I find odd).

Pakage-wise, this has come up as best:

Unlimited BT Infinity 1 with wknd calls (38Mb)
£27.99 incl. line rental x 12 months
+£45.95 up front
=£381.83 over 12 months
-£100 voucher
=£281.83
=£23.49 average a month

Any ideas how fast is activation or if I should push for a better deal over the phone to them (e.g. blag free tv or something, even as a trial?)

Edit: will add TV starter + BT Sport (£10 activation and free every month)

If anyone has referral codes etc, let me know. Will order later tonight.

Have you tried the HH for those things? Under "BT Access Control" you can configure "internet blocked between .. and .." per device.

Cool, ta.

Where can I find this BT web control panel? Is that within the 'MyBT' pages somewhere?
