BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Openreach to rollout 3dB target SNRm for FTTC next year (March 2017) say BT

1.2.2
VDSL2 noise margins
Currently the default target downstream noise margin is set to 6dB.
From March 2017 the target downstream noise margin shall be set to either 3, 4, 5 or 6dB
the actual value shall be determined by the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) algorithm based on line stability.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean in reality? More people likely to achieve the current maximum of 76/80mbit on FTTC?

Hmm, I hope that will improve things for me. I currently get around 26-30mb down. Would be nice back to the full 40 again before the cab filled up.

Based on our observations speed increases are roughly in line with the following figures.

~ For existing Sync speeds of around 20Mbps - each 3dB is worth 3Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of around 40Mbps - each 3dB is worth 6Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of 60Mbps or more - each 3dB is worth 11Mbps.

BT wholesale ADSL (copper) lines already have a 3dB profile available to them. Obviously this increase wont make any difference if you are already syncing at the maximum speed ie 80Mbps or 40Mbps if you are on a 40/10 or 40/2 product.

Been with Bt Infinity 2 for a week now, line speed has been stable at 55/18 I was hoping it would creep up to the advertised 76mbps. Am I out of luck, was this just an 'advertised speed' as I may as well of just had infinity 1.

Edit to add Infinity checker on the BT website says guaranteed minimum of 58mbps (obviously falling slightly short of that) 64-80mbps predicted range.

Will I be fighting a losing battle contacting them?

I'd take 55/18 over 52/10. It depends on whether you have any use for the increased upload speed.

If you aren't reaching the minimum guaranteed speed it would be worth contacting them.

How are you testing the speed?

Presumably you've checked that there's nothing wrong at your end (e.g. extension wiring)?

Download 55
Upload 18

True, perhaps you're right, the upload would be appreciated.

There should not be anything wrong my end, straight from BT socket to router and wired to computer in the same room.

Tested with Speedtest.net, the BT version & the netflix version I saw posted here previously.

So I'm now looking at getting a second line because we live so far from the exchange the best we get is roughly 16 Down 1.5 Up.

What exactly is the procedure for the engineer? I presume a new faceplate will be installed but where does the cable come from etc?

I guess the extra upload is good - but is it worth £20 to you?
I think the price difference between Infinity 1 & 2 is around £20/month.
On Infinity 1 you'd be getting 52/10
On infinity 2 you're getting 55/18

In that position I'd personally save the £20/month.

BT must have seen this conversation, my router just reset and I'm now up to 60/18. An improvement above the guaranteed minimum, maybe it will come up more yet.

Does anyone know when BT will allow orders for FTTP (330/30)? The BT wholesale checker says its available at the exchange at my new address but there doesn't appear to be any way to order it or even get an idea of cost.

You have to call them. Tell the sales team it is FTTP. You get forwarded to a special team.

Last time I checked it was £20 a month + line rental for 70mb, £40 a month for 200mb and £50 a month for 300mb.

EDIT: I assumed that your house already had FTTP laid (e.g. new build) like mine.

Our estate had FTTP put in place at the beginning. I currently pay £45 ex line rental for BT Infinity 3 (220mb) service and that gets me 27 meg per second flat out. After 3 years on having it i've only had 1 service outage.

It's so frustrating... my block is the only building in my area without fibre enabled. Every single other cabinet has it but ours (included the houses across the street!). Is there anyone who i could talk to to get them to speed this up?

I was wondering if anyone here has experience of moving BT Broadband from your old house to your new house?

I'm currently in Aberdeen and will move back to my other flat in Glasgow at the end of December/beginning of Jan.

In our Glasgow flat, we just have ADSL from Sky Broadband (which contract is up mid-Feb).

My VDSL with BT Broadband in Aberdeen is 55/10 service and I've paid line rental in advance (contract isn't up until June-ish 2017).

A few questions:

(a) When is best to notify BT of moving?
(b) Is it all self installs these days? Or is it best to get an Openreach person out to check the condition of the line / install filtered faceplate?

Thanks!
