BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Damn, ordered an Infinity 2 package 4 days ago when the deal was £49.99 / month (£125 rewards card + £110 quidco cashback). They've now got a black friday deal of £44.99 (£100 rewards card + £110 quidco), anyone know what my chances are of getting them to honour the new price on my current order or would I have to cancel and reorder? :S

Give them a call, it was only the other week they gave me discount - without me asking - whilst I was on the phone discussing FTTP.

Tempted to terminate my Plusnet contract due to them constantly failing to provide my estimated speed for over 2 weeks. PN use BT lines so not sure if I'll be any better off or not though.

After a year and a half on Infinity 2 up in my village, sitting stable at roughly 63/18 now. Started off at 76/18 but DLM did its thing.

Funny thing is, it can't make up its mind. On the off occasion the modem ends up rebooting, the DLM profile it taken off and the speed goes all the way up to 81! This lasts a week or so then DLM brings it back down.

The only time the internet ever cuts off is when DLM applies profiles - hate the ****ing thing.

Yep did so and they honoured the new deal :)

Was expecting a battle but no questions asked!

Theyre good for that, if ya wanna change your package they will just move you over to a new contract, i managed to get loads knocked off mine just by ringing up and asking what deals they had going and if they could add them to my package.

Is that with line rental? Zen is only £46.99 a month. No cashback I admit, but the service is impeccable.

So following on from the issues I was having earlier in this thread I switched from Plusnet to Zen yesterday and lost a lot off my sync and download rates.

Long story short despite syncing at full speed with PN I was only getting around 68Mb down rather than the 75Mb I should be.

I'm a bit miffed as I've always been at full sync, line length of 150m. :(

Do these stat from the router tell you anything? Before the switch with PN my sync was ~75000 and the max rate was ~77000. My upload has not changed.

Code:
Line Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Type: VDSL2
Annex Type: Annex A

Upstream	Downstream
Current Rate(kbps)	19999	70338
Max Rate(kbps) 28030	70342
SNR Margin(dB) 15.4	6.2
Line Attenuation(dB)	10.9	6.3
Errors(pkts) 220	461

I can't do a test on the BTW site to check my IP Profile as it just say this:

"The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider."

I've raised this with Zen.

I did wonder that, but why would the switch from PN to Zen (simply changing my ISP's username and PW in the router) account for a loss of ~7Mb off my max rate?

Just wanted to advise people that if you have slow speeds in the evenings then phone BT up everyday and they will change your over to another network box with fewer people ! I was getting 50 MB down in the day times and in the evenings this would drop to 10MB down !! unacceable so good to hear they are finally changing me over to a network with fewer peeps on it.

Lines get more noise in the winter due to street lights etc, DLM is reset when you changed provider if it has detected more noise it will sync lower.

You could try rebooting the modem around midday when there is less chance of noise.

Have you checked your wiring in the house as a 150m line should be able to sync well over the max 80, my line is 410m and I am sync'd at the full 80/20 with a max attenable rate around 85 (it was at 115 before cross talk started bringing this down as more people took up FTTC)

Internal wiring is fine, and hasn't changed for ages. Prefiltered faceplate > HG612 via a shielded twisted RJ11 > Asus N66U via Cat6 Ethernet.

If there is an issue its in the copper somewhere I assume, but as I'm (just) above the 59Mb limit I'm **** out of luck.

Hey guys,

Finally got the FTTP sorted in my house and have my Infinity 2 being activated on Tuesday. They are sending me the new Smart Hub but had a question with regards to how it works with the Open Reach modem I've got installed under the stairs?

Do I have to connect the Smart Hub to the Open Reach modem? Which would be annoying as it would mean keeping the Smart Hub under the stairs which wouldn't be my first choice for positioning for best signal :p

Thanks bremen, finally got the Smart Hub yesterday but the supplied cable is so short that I currently have the Smart Hub in the cupboard under the stairs with the open reach modem. Not ideal!

I'm going to drill through the wall and feed the cable through to the living room but will need a longer cable. What type of cable do I need?
