BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Isn't an FTTC activation allocating a spare port to the new provider and then an Openreach tech doing the jumpering in the cabinet, so it requires a spare?

From what 'BT Chat' said to me I think the reason BT wont supply fibre (want to give me Faster Broadband instead), is due to the speed estimate for my line being to low and the distance from the cabinet.

A lot of the time when they run a check they look for an empty port on the cabinet rather than checking if you have fibre. I know when we (sky) check by telephone number we pick up the existing fibre connection. I can't speak for other providers though.

MissChief do you know why when I try the Sky checker, it says I can only get Sky Fibre and not Max (formerly Pro)? I used to have Fibre Pro last year for 2 years.

I already have an existing Fibre 65/18 line with Plusnet currently. Initially I thought Sky's own network is classed as LLU almost, so maybe their kit is full. But then thought well if that's true why can I get the 40/10 package still?

I tried live chat and the bloke said I can order Pro but not Max. Last I heard Max replaced Pro? But he said I can order 'Pro' but I had to ring up... Am I missing something here?

If you can order Pro then there shouldn't be a reason why you can't order Max. Pro essentially IS Max, just without discounts and a 12m contract instead. What does http://dslchecker.bt.com say for your 'clean' Fibre speeds?

We supply lower speeds than that, but if there's not a decent increase from DSL to FTTC, what's the point in paying the extra? I've seen 1 Meg DSL and people upgrading to 8-10Meg Fibre. They're happy because they can watch Netflix.

Where my phone line enters my house, I also appear to have a black cable and what looks like a network cable. Any idea what these are likely to be? I know the bottom part of my estate has FTTH, I'm hoping my house has the fibre ran to it but it's not being setup until the rest of the development is done. I'm currently chugging along on 1.5 MB/s ADSL!

Hi mate, speeds are:

When FTTC was first released I got a 80/20 sync with Sky Fibre Pro at the time c3 years ago. Over time more people got it in my area, so crosstalk kicked in and the last year odd my lines now stuck at about 65/18.

But for some reason EE and Sky neither will offer me the 76Mb package anymore... Bizarre! But BT, Plusnet, Talktalk, Zen still offer me the required package.

No wait time on my cab, in fact we had a 2nd cab fitted for further capacity.

I think it's because of the speed estimates being so low that Max won't really be worth it in some companies eyes.

So Sky (and probably EE too) are seeing the clean 'low' speed and think "no point" - totally ignoring the actual achievable or even 'high' speeds.

Ridiculous it seems :( ... Throwing custom away! Especially as I used to be on Fibre Pro before.

Quite infuriating! Especially as my line is actually achieving 65/18 without a sweat, never had a dropout unless I reboot router or been exchange/cab maintenance/national outage.

Seems I had vectoring enabled on my line last night :).

Hi all,

Just had my BT upgraded to Infinity 2 (from Unlimited Broadband at 7mb).

How long does it usually take for the downstream to get up to speed? I appreciate I've only had it activated for a few hours, it's currently at 20mb according to Speedtest, out of the quoted 72mb. I assume I should just be waiting a few days to see how it goes?

It will settle down after a couple of days, just don't turn the router off at anytime for say the next week to 10 days, just to be safe.

Hmmmm, at this price, how can my other half not want us to go Infinity 3? Currently on Infinity 1 in our flat but moving in a couple of weeks and I'd suggested we try Infinity 3.

The upfront cost is less than Infinity 2.

It should be near enough max from the go. How are you testing?

I'm using Speedtest.net. My PC is wired in to a secondary Netgear R7500 router (the BT hub is only acting as a modem, no firewall and all traffic passed to my router. I'll try again later with my laptop wired straight into the BT Hub just to see. But I've have tests ranging from 8mb to 74mb, no 2 ever seem to be the same just now. Hopefully it will settle down a bit over the next few days!
