BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

My BT Infinity contract ended last week so I signed up to the BT deal from MSE for £27.99/month with £150 reward card which makes it £345 a year under my wife's name so I'm wondering will they do anything at the exchange to my line when it comes to the activation day?

Thanks, just signed up via that too.

After emailing the Openreach CEO a few months ago due to the active date being put back several times at 6 months a piece I now have fibre available.

Just trying to workout who to go with now that I am free from the shackles of Virgin

EDIT: are they all going to charge me to install a phone line?

I'm moving from BT Unlimited Infinity 1 (up to 52MB) to Plusnet Unlimited Fibre Extra (up to 76MB) but do I keep my current place in the cabinet or do I get moved to a different place in the cabinet or to a different one? As my line with BT has been fine and stable but switching to Plusnet due to better prices.

You'll get a DLM reset as you're changing products but whether you'll change port is anyone's guess. I believe it does sometimes happen.

Plusnet don't seem to want to look any further at my line speed and said I can leave without penalty.

What's the going rate on a new line installation? Tempted to see if a new drop wire might improve things, and get the socket moved whilst they're at it.

IIRC it's £130. Depending on how you handle it you'd be risking a broadband cease charge (£30?) as well.

Getting a new line won't necessary get you any new wiring. If there's a spare pair in the existing cable they'll use it.

Oh I thought they'd reduced it a lot now. Cease charge shouldn't apply as it's below the handback threshold so I should be able to cease the line without any charge.

And yes need to check if they'll need to run a new dropwire, but I think the existing is only a single pair.

My BT contract ended on Wednesday and switching to Plusnet in two weeks however do I pay BT for the month service including line rental or only the two weeks that I use?

They will bill you as normal till the day you disconnect, you pay a month in advance for line rental and broadband etc. so you should be in credit, they'll then raise a final bill for any calls/line rental and service up to the day of disconnection and credit you with the service you have already paid in advance for. Depending on the usage you may see a refund or at least a smaller than expected bill.

Quick question. What's the general consensus/preferred replacement router at the moment? (When I say router I mean VDSL modem/router)

The best place is the middle of the house but practically speaking that is hardly ever an option which is why range extenders/additional access points and mesh networks exist.

My bt is up for renewal soon. People that say plusnet are cheap are there any caveats? do they throttle? Or frown upon downloading/uploading large amounts or data?
