BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Yeah you can, Its what I use (unlocked) Its an amazing modem, rock stable. FWIW I use an Asus AC86u.

Is it relatively easy to set-up? Not too familiar with networking.

I would say so - I did a similar thing where I put my old ISP router in bridge mode using it as a modem and attached an ASUS router to it. I have a huawei modem and keep meaning to replace my new VDSL router with it as I prefer my ASUS router but I'm lazy. Not sure if I need to unlock the modem as I don't really go to that level of detail. All you're doing is having an ethernet cable out of the modem into the router - that's it

Router + HG612 is trivially simple.

Connect them together and create a PPPoE connection on the router. No need for any special firmware or unlocking.

The only obvious exception is Sky because they use different authentication and you need to make sure the router supports it.

I have emailed Zen regarding the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, they are showing up as a supplier so be interesting to see what they come back with, when I last spoke to them about FTTPoD they were not interested.

Interesting, let us know how you get on.

They called me earlier today and sadly Zen are only offering Gigabit Voucher Scheme for leased lines and not FTTPoD, which they are still not offering :(

Noticed my downstream connection is now at 3.1 dB instead of 6.x dB. My sync speed has jumped from ~72 to ~78 Mb/s but actual download speeds haven't changed, still max out at ~70 Mb/s.

I've moved house and from an Huawei cab with a HG612 running a 3db SNR and G.INP to a small ECI cab.

There is no G.INP on ECI cabs is there? I've not even bothered plugging in my HG612 and just stuck in the HH6 for now.

Probably have to wait for DLM to raise your profile?

No I don't think you get G.INP on ECI cabs. Yet.

I've been playing about with grafana and collecting some data from my trusty HG612 3b. So far I'm collecting SNR, power and attenuation. Is there anything else worth recording? FEC perhaps?

Unfortunately the HG612 doesn't have SNMP, or anything else clever that I can see, so instead I have a script to login via telnet, send the output of the stats command to a log file and parse it. It's a complete hack but the end result looks smart :D

BT emailed me and asked if I wanted to join the Smart Hub 2 trial. I thought what the hell and accepted so should be getting my new Hub next week. What I really wanted was an email for a 1gbps trial but I can wait ;)

That would be the trial that you sign an NDA to be part of ;)

Anyone have an email for Openreach, i'm curious of the work they're doing in our street. New boxes at the top of each pole, alongside the current one. Part of m thinks G.Fast but i thought they had ditched that in favour of full fibre.

Will try and get a photo when i get home so i can have a look. My luck they're just replacing the standard but that would seem wasteful with FTTP being rolled out.

It's likely to be FTTP. G.Fast, like FTTC, doesn't require any new infrastructure between you and the location of your local green cabinet.

What do Roadworks.org and the Openreach checker say?
