BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

No one gets close to 900mb on power line in the real world. WiFi doesn’t achieve it either (yes, I know it’s possible but it’s not realistic in most set ups).

The only real solution is to cable it up.

The question should really be, why bother paying the extra for 900mb if your only using WiFi or power lines. Drop the package and save some money or spend the money to cable it up so you can actually take advantage.

No because a cable will do 10Gbps all day long regardless of what other clients on the network are doing ;)

If you have a Wi-Fi 6 network though and it's performing to acceptable standards then leave it alone.

Cabling from apparently Virgin is being laid outside. Will this mean BT can offer me FTTP now via these cables or is this strictly Virign only services? Kind of sucks if not since our BT contract got renewed last month.

Openreach and Virgin Media recently teamed up for the laying of fibre in Northern Ireland's larger towns but I'm not aware of that happening elsewhere.

BT currently £34.99 and £9.99 setup.
Sky £28 and no setup. Easy choice for now but fingers crossed Sky get their act together and get some FTTP packages later this year.

Yip they’re literally doing my estate right now. The utility-line markers have been sprayed on the footpath outside my house.

You would think the government would make them team up and it would be great for competition. Just seems stupid that digging will have to be done twice for many properties!

BT's headline prices aren't that firm though. When I signed up last year they gave me 300Mb with an automatic discount of £14 a month without me even asking. So instead of £59.99 I was paying £45.99. Now I'm on their gigabit package for an extra £4 (£50 a month.)

I switched from TalkTalk FTTC to Vodafone FTTC today despite all of the horror stories about the latter.

These are my pings to bbc.co.uk before and after the switch:

The packet loss is a bit concerning...

Or it shows that there's possibly sub optimal routing in place between you and that destination host but outside of Vodafone. There could be an issue somewhere upstream for example so traffic is taking a less desirable route. Or this could be how things normally are but the constraint is upstream of Vodafone.

It doesn't necessarily point to the Vodafone network being the cause, you just can't tell that from a few pings. I'm not saying that isn't the case, but there's plenty of other possible reasons.

This is true. I also forgot to mention that I'm not using the same router that I did with TalkTalk so I don't know if that's affecting it at all.

I decided to use the Vodafone-supplied one (for now) because it has GbE ports on it which I've missed on my old router.

Isn't the latency increase just going to be the DLM profile reset that happens when you change provider? Leave the modem synced up and it will most likely come back down.
