BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Had my first scare at the weekend, NO not cause of Halloween .... but rather my connection speed dropped to just over 2mb. Was only when I went to transfer a large file form PC to WD tv live hub and it said it would take 3 hours that I thought oh oh. Reboot router and bingo back to full speed :)

I have a crappy phone line which is 6km from the exchange and gives me just 2mbit on ADSL2+.

You can imagine my suprise, therefore when I was presented with this on the BT Infinity checker:

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 18.9Mbps and upstream line speed of 3.7Mbps.

Can I start celebrating yet? It looks like it has taken into account my line length and still thinks I can get the service?

This is like all my dreams ever, coming true at once

Don't celebrate until the work is complete, it could still be delayed but you can look forward to a faster connection next year.

It's not the timescales I'm that fussed about, more the technical chance of it happening. I've ALWAYS had problems getting decent connections here because we are so far from the exchange. Right back as far as 2001 where they denied my BT HomeHighway. I didn't even get ADSL until 2005 and even then it was 512k for years.

Is distance from exchange no longer an issue?

With infinity, it's the distance to your street cab.

FTTC is all about making the exchange irrelevant. With FTTC, the exchange for your broadband is basically inside the green cabinet. So your new line length would be judged on the distance from your house to the green cabinet, rather than all the way back to the exchange building.

Congrats btw :)

When you say 'exchange' you mean cabinet yeah?

No, I mean exchange as thats where all my problems have been in the past :p

How do I find out where the cabinet is? :p

Take a drive :p

It will as said be fibre to the cabinet but then from where it is (local village) to your home copper line.

Take the positive as it appears you are doing, I've been in the same situation as yourself for years, rubbish connection and then bingo ! No matter what you get will be an improvement.

My cabinet is just over the road.

19mbit is the most amazing speed I've ever heard ever, so really my euphoria at not having 2mbit completely over-rides the dissapointment of not getting 40mbit.

I guess what I want to know is can I set up a countdown on my wall, order champagne and have a massive party or could they still turn around and say 'Your line sucks, please go away'?

LOL you sir are a man after my own heart ! I've gone from barely 1.5mb conn to pretty much a constant 28mb+ Fear not they won't turn around and say no to you, as for countdown just keep the fingers crossed as they do have a habit of changing dates.

The BT line checker is pretty conservative in its estimates, too.

It often states 35Mbit for lines that are literally 30 meters to the cabinet.

You should be ok. They've acknowledged that the cabinet your line is connected to is being upgraded so I can't see why you wouldn't get it. Your line is very unlikely to be too far from the cabinet to get any kind of FTTC service so if I were in your position, I certainly would be getting my hopes up about getting the service.

However while I'd suggest not getting your hopes up about speed, it's worth noting that the BT speed checkers are quite conservative. For example, a colleague of mine was estimated to receive around 12mbit down and 2mbit up - the lowest speed estimate I've ever seen. He actually ended up getting 30mbit down and 2mbit up because of the upstream cap...no doubt he'd get faster than that if BT would remove it. He's actually a fair distance from the cab in a straight line (almost 1km) so that was remarkably good.
