BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Well that's what the specialist team offered me when I spoke to them. I don't know too much about it all to be honest, but he did say we are in quite a unique situation here as this is a brand new estate with this 'new type' of fibre connection. I have no idea what he meant by that. But this is what was emailed to me.

That is interesting actually. I could never afford anything like it so it was a tad irrelevant but it was nice to know it was an option. Surely he wouldn't have offered it it wasn't available.
 
FTTP and FTTP on Demand are two different services. Some new build housing estates (and a few other areas) have FTTP available instead of FTTC.

Understood. So would I be better off picking up a Draytek 130 and using that in conjunction with my Time Capsule instead of using the supplied BT HH5? I don't know how Infinity works, is there a username and password that I'd need to set up and if so, are they easily obtainable?

Yeah, imo you would. BT HH5 is a nice solution if you're someone who doesn't care for the details of your connection and just want it 'to work', not something you'd use if it you want to get the best out of it. However that being said the Huwaei HG612 for £20 on eBay is perfectly acceptable and a really good modem.

And nah, username is [email protected], no password, just write in BT if your router has to have something written down for it.

Use the HH5 for a bit, see how you like it, then upgrade if you want additional features or you're finding it isn't working as well as it should. No point spending money in anticipation of problems or shortcomings that you might not even have or notice.
 
Thinking about getting BT Fibre. Upgrade from standard Sky.


My biggest concern is packet loss/choke in peak times as I game a lot. I guess there's no real way to check this. (although Sky aparently does have a lower ping/better performance in peak times). The majority of people in my area are with BT. I'm not sure if that makes it more congested?


The other annoying thing is you need to sign up for 12 months contract for BT Sport HD on your skybox. Which is terribly annoying!

Any thoughts on the performance thing? Or should both providers be the same? I did read BT route some traffic through Sheffield which cause higher latency, I'm not sure if they do that anymore.
 
If you were taking Infinity from BT as a new customer you'd be in a contract anyway? If you're basing you're decision around getting BT Sport then BT is much cheaper. If you're not bothered about BT Sport then see what Sky can do for you?

Disagree here, main problem is you have to be proactive with Infinity - if it decides to drop connections a bunch you just screwed your IP profile big time if DLM takes action.

It's not worth the risk, and also I've seen some people on facebook sharing HH5s that melted! Bad batch going around.

By the way, forgot to mention I only just got your trust message yesterday, sorry man, would've helped you out with it if I got it when I was supposed to. :o
 
Ha no worries, fortunately the new one arrived on the Monday. :)

Does DLM not allow the connection to improve again once it's been stable for a while then? Just ordered Infinity for my new flat (£10pm plus line rental, £50 Sainsbury's gift card and should get £130 cashback via Quidco!) and intended to just use a HH5 but maybe I'll investigate some alternative options.
