BT ordered to block pirate links

Ok, then please give us a decent answer.
If you would care to tell me what exactly is indecent about my answer, I will try to make it more appropriate for a family forum :p

While it is quite depressing that BT have agreed to implement this ...
I don't think that BT exactly 'agreed' to this. As I understand they were told by a judge to block access to this site.

... there are ways around these feeble tactics. ...
I'm sure there are, and I have no doubt that a few of BT's customers will stay with them and find ways around this block.

... The main thing is that today is the day the BT fell in-line with the Chinese and the likes of the Nazis etc. ...
Uhhhh, yeeess, certainly a point of view.

... Customers will be jumping off the BT ISP ship as we speak in their hundreds.
And BT will lose a wee bit of money :p

If anything this would make ISP's more money the 1% of users that actually use the full allocation of download limit probably cost them money

Let's put it this way - as a result of this ruling, some people will move from BT to other ISPs (probably NOT Sky :p). BT will lose that revenue / money and someone else will gain it . . . by virtue of facilitating piracy - QED.

If your local pub allowed drug dealers to operate form the premises, it might be seen as a USP, encouraging people to drop in for a pint when they needed to score, thereby profiting from drug dealing, no?

Well that's back peddling isn't it?

in your op

Seems reasonable to me; I have never understood why ISPs were allowed to make money out of piracy

You phrase it in the past tense as if they have always been making money out of piracy and this law is going to stop that.

But now you say

Let's put it this way - as a result of this ruling, some people will move from BT to other ISPs (probably NOT Sky :p). BT will lose that revenue / money and someone else will gain it . . . by virtue of facilitating piracy - QED.

That the way they make money from piracy is by people moving to thier service because another one bans it, so in fact it's this new ruling that's letting them make money from piracy.

So before this how did they make money from piracy given that no one was blocking links to pirate sites and no one was moving because of it?

Bye bye to what, your ability to download pirated movies?

Not that black and white though is it? Who is going to define what isn't "suitable" for people to view? You can be sure as hell it won't be done transparently and with due process.

Just like I said above it is a dangerous precedent and the thin edge of the wedge disguised as preventing "piracy"

I wonder so if combined with a "super injunction" they could block any site including any foreign news site etc and it would never be reported and aside fro mthe people that used to visit it no one would ever know.

They can get legislation, ban, block, threaten and sue until they are blue in the face but until they truly really understand the massive complexity of the issues behind how and why people pirate movies/games/music they will never ever stop it.

They will always be fighting a losing battle, due to nothing more than their own ignorance and bullheadedness.

Justice Arnold ruled:

"Google has actual knowledge of other persons using its service to infringe copyright: it knows that the users and operators of Newzbin2 infringe copyright on a large scale, and in particular infringe the copyrights of the Studios in large numbers of their films and television programmes; it knows that the users of Newzbin2 include Google users and it knows those users use its service to receive infringing copies of copyright works made available to them by Newzbin2."

I've edited the quote from Judge Arnold to show how stupid his comment is.

Since most ISP's use BT's backbone at some point aren't most going to be affected depending on where BT end up putting the block?

Being a none BT land line owner, I don't have access to any of the ISP services most of you on. In Hull where I love, kingston communications owns the line and we have access to 1 ISP, theirs. They monitor all of the top packages for signs of downloading illegal content as well and send you a letter informing you that if you don't write to appologise and also cease all activity, your internet will be permanently disconnected. Two of my friends have had to send letters off for downloading music, films and games via torrenting. If they got their internet connection cut off here, they'd be **** out of luck in terms of getting a decent internet connection again lol.

Due to that, I can't really see any problem with this ban and neither should anyone else who only downloads legit software only.

Freedom of speech and freedom to do whatever, the problem is claiming the Internet to be owned by someone (rights wise) it's not, the best thing about it is freedom of expression (obviously this isn't always good) but most of the time it's its greatest strength

But let's be realistic, the main reason you're annoyed is because you can't download your free music and videos, and it's not because of "freedom", it's because you don't want to pay for them.

Why not block Google?

A simple search brings up a gazillion results too :o:rolleyes:
