Budget 2500K First Time Build

That's probably why I'm not worried about SSD's at the moment!!

I have two SAS drives for my Windows 7 install and I use two Velcoraptors for my games. They aren't the fastest drives in the world, but I'd only be waiting for others to load games when playing online... Instead, they are probably waiting for me!!

I do wonder what the other SAS drives I have will score, they are a lot faster :)

Dispatched: Crucial M4 128GB SSD, Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 keyboard and mouse combo, HDMI--> DVI lead, 3pin cable extension, arctic thermal paste and 3pin fan cable extension.

The SSD order said, "order dispatched, expect delivery between Mon-Fri 7:00AM-7:00PM".

Will you be overclocking the CPU much at all?

Not straight away, but yes. The plan is to just enjoy it stock for a while. Stock, this will be light years faster then the laptop I've been using the past 4 years with it's 1.66GHz dual core, 1GB RAM and 60GB hard drive. This is not only my first build, but first desktop PC as well. My laptop can't even handle flash games or 720 youtube videos.

I will overclock, get a HSF and a GPU, but I reckon I'll need to get a more powerful PSU before that. The builder series 430W PSU may struggle. :)

Well gimme a shout when you do upgrade your PSU, let me know as I'm after a few lower powered PSU's for my AMD systems (I have four of them!!) so I'm hoping to get a few at a decent price!!

I'd defo recommend the Corsair AX series, they are fantastic :) I'm sure the 850W model would be plenty, but you could always grab the 1200W models if you fancied. I'm in need of an upgrade myself from my AX1200!!

I think 850W may be overkill. I certainly have no plans for any sort of multi GPU setup or water cooling. I reckon 650W would be ample, and I hear such good things about Corsair PSUs, I'll definitely be sticking with them.

Ok then, £200 for the 580 and AX1200. :)

Everything dispatched above has arrived except the SSD, keyboard+mouse. Very annoying as I had the whole day off today and would've been perfect. Meh.

I always end up going for a bit more than I know I would need else I would hate having to buy something twice, also future proofs things a little too just incase you do buy something bigger than you think :)

I'd at least go for the 750W model then, the only reason I mentioned the 850W was that it has two 8 pin CPU plugs :)

I'm gutted to hear that the SSD didnt turn up :( I was looking forward to the review!! :)

The way I try to negate buying twice is to buy secondhand, so at least I won't lose much, if any, money. :D

But if buying new, then I'll usually go for more than I need right now. Hence the 2500K instead of the i3 2100 I was initially going to get, the 128GB SSD instead of the original 64GB I was going to get, and the 8GB RAM instead of the 4GB.

Your most welcome :) You can teach me how to overclock the CPU :)

I'm looking to get a Sandy Bridge setup at some point, I've been offered a 2600k that'll do 5.2Ghz and that comes with a motherboard and 8Gb of ram... I'm kinda tempted :)

What SSD did you say you went for again?

I think with the SB setups are just a case of upping the multiplier but I could be wrong.. I've not yet used a SB setup but I'm hoping to get some experience soon when I visit my friend who has one. I think he also wanted me to bring a 580 along with me, so I think it might be a good day :) I dont think he has another setup to buy ;)

I will have a look into the SSD. I'll see if I can budget for one over the next few months :) A lot is having to change!!

What's the benefit of this? Isn't the CPU either 4 or 8 pins? So would this PSU power two mobos/CPUs?

Some motherboards like my 759 or 762 have two CPU pin connections. I'm not sure if the SB setups do, but the i7 boards I think have them for extra power when you overclock them. I think it might be for just when your going into the extremes mind but I think it might help when you are overclocking :)

I do believe however that a decent PSU will give you a much better chance at overclocking and that's its not all down to the wattage the PSU's give. I used to use a QTEC model years ago, I went out and bought a Enermax unit that was 100W less if I recall correctly.. I was able to push the overclocking further even with the same hardware.. I've never used anything like that since as I learnt my lesson :)
