Budget 2500K First Time Build

I think they might have been downsizing the power requirements for the boards with the SB setups, but I know my two i7 boards have two 8 pin plugs on them. I am now wondering if the newer x3970's etc have 2 8 pin plugs on those as well..

Just plugged in all my cables, waiting for SSD and keyboard.

Typing from my new PC now.

FINALLY!!

I'm currently just running Ubuntu from a USB stick. Need to just install the SSD and Windows.

So happy right now. :D

I'm gutted to hear that the SSD didnt turn up :( I was looking forward to the review!! :)

Well, I don't have any like-for-like system to compare, but I'll tell you this. Boots up a stock W7 OS in under 20 seconds. I'm sure there are tweaks to make it faster too. And everything opens practically instantly. So far I mean just windows and system apps etc. I haven't installed any software yet, nor any benchmarking apps. I'll get to that eventually. Loving it. :D

Installed all the mobo and intel drivers, and MSE. Next is Office 2010, as I have assessments due next week, but now I rest. I'll try to get some desk pics up at some point, but the case is under the desk.

I need some quieter fans, this thing is rather annoying. I put the PSU upside down, but there aren't any vents underneath. The turbulence may be making it louder. But if I flip the PSU, I don't know if the CPU power cable will around the mobo instead of across. I've turned off the case side fan, and the exhaust fans have been set to low. May have to get some quieter fans later. I actually think it's mostly the Akasa front intake fans.

Sounds like someone is in PC heaven right about now!! :D

The SSD's are great and I must admit the most annoying thing for me is having the Adaptec cards in my systems because it makes the boot up time take an age, maybe between one and two minutes before I see Windows desktop, but when I get it loaded, everything is pretty much as fast as I'd need it.
I do score a kinda nice 6.2 for the disk drive speed but that's on the slowest of SAS drives I have so I'm kinda interested in how two or even four or even eight of the faster Seagate drives will score! I doubt over 7 but who knows!! What does your SSD score??

I'm so pleased for you to have a system your happy with :D Looking forward to seeing the pics and hearing about how your gonna tweak it all ;)

Very happy. :D

If we're talking windows experience index, it got a 7.9 for disk transfer rate. Overall was 6.2.

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz 7.5
Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB 7.6
Graphics Intel(R) HD Graphics Family 6.2
Gaming graphics 1696 MB Total available graphics memory 6.2
Primary hard disk 94GB Free (119GB Total) 7.9

The front Akasa LED fans were ridiculously noisy. I've just unplugged all these Akasa intake fans, so it's just running the two stock Antec exhaust fans top and back. MUCH quieter now! For just normal usage, it's stays under 30 degress C. Sitting at 27 right now.

Sounds all very good to me!! Very impressed with the SSD result... My friends Vertex 2 manages 7.1.. I'm not sure of the difference tho!
Would you be considering a Corsair water cooler or would you be sticking with air cooling??

Well, I've seen some people get 5.something on WEI but then it benchmarks normally (400-500MB/s ish). It seems WEI is a bit hit and miss apparently.

I'm looking to not spend more than £20-25 for a cooler, I doubt any decent water cooler would be that cheap. I was thinking about the Ghelid Tranquillo is about £25 new and gets good reviews. I don't even know if the radiator from those cooler would fit without modding.

Well I have two water cooling loops here, I'm sure I could sell you something pretty cheap :) You'd just need a pump and a res if you wanted one :) I have everything else :)

I'm sure that even a fairly good air cooler would allow you to give you more than enough room for a fairly high overclock :)

Oh, I thought you were talking about those little closed loop liquid coolers like the H60 or something like that. Thanks, but I'll just stick with a simple air cooler for now. :)

I was meaning just water cooling in a loose term, I wasnt going to limit to one particular thing! I'm trying to get rid of them, as they are just sat in the corner of the PC room, doing nothing!!

I'm unsure how good the closed loop cooler are but it all depends on what you want from a cooler and how far you wish to go. I think it all depends on how mad you are!! :)

If I ever try proper water cooling, I'd do it in another case, not an Antec 300! :p

I can barely think of a good reason to even overclock right now, let alone needing water cooling. Right now, I just don't do anything too intensive. Who knows what the future holds though. Batch processing a folder of 100 15MB RAW files may need some grunt, but I'm not there yet.
