Budget 2500K First Time Build

Oooooh, maybe I can pick your brains then :D What make/model of monitor do you have?? I do need to try and get something that works at that res, I wasn't sure of what would be best to get :(

I wish I was more knowledgeable about monitors. Mine is the Dell U2311H 23" IPS monitor. Supposed to be one of the better screens for colours etc. I got it because this machine is mainly for photoshop use. It's not exactly a great gaming monitor, but I've heard some get by with it. I really have nothing to compare though, it's the only monitor I've ever bought and before that was just a 1280x800 laptop screen. Check out the Monitor subforum, many are very knowledgeable there.

Trying to find what the 6850 requires, but the CX430 gives out 28 amps on the 12V rail and 336W.

I think the 6850 draws a little over 130W on the 12V rail.

Thanks guys, I'll report back when I've made some headway on this.

One thing is for damn sure now - I will not be taking in posting nice pics with the GPU in. :)
Nothing wrong with the GPU, but now it's a mess in there. Before, I could at least tuck all the cables and both 2.5" drives away inside and behind the drive caddy/frame thing. Can't really do that now with the GPU in. Definitely need a new case now. :D

Was so looking forward to gaming on my long weekend after exams. I'm back on Monday starting a research project that will end up being a 6000 word write up. -_-

You could try taking the card to OC warehouse/office, maybe they'll exchange it there and then - if there is one near you. But yeah, that sucks:(

6000 words in how many weeks? Oxford students do 2x2000 essays each week:)

Yeah, I've heard we have it pretty easy for essays. We only had to do about 3 essays at 2500 words per month. But we also had presentations and critical appraisals to do on study papers.

But this 6000 word write up is not an essay. This is an original research paper. Completely different.

I think the OcUK HQ is too far away. :(

Oh ok, yeah research is different. Most people take it easy and then do 60% work in the last couple of weeks with those. Not suggesting that is the right way to go about it:) What is your research on?

What brand is your faulty card?

Yeah, I've heard the same. I may do 80% in the last week. :p

It's the Asus 6850. :( Playing Deus Ex on like Nintendo graphics. :(

When did OCUK suggest you'd receive your replacement? maybe you could buy another one and return this one for refund - that'd be quicker.

Just sent the RMA now, haven't heard back from them. I dunno, what with it being a pre-order deal before, now a different price, probably just get confusing. Plus, I may need what little overdraft I have left.

I'm fairly patient, not too upset. I'll still be on a high having just finished my exams! :D

Yeah, they have to test it. I really hope it is actually faulty now. If it isn't faulty, there's a £12.50 fee plus shipping back to me plus I don't get re-reimbursed for the shipping I paid to send it back. It'd cost me nearly £30 just to get back a card that doesn't work on my PC. Could've gotten a 6870 for that sort of money.

Update: OcUK found that it was faulty and the item is being replaced and sent out right away. Sent it out Thursday at 5:30PM and heard back Saturday. Not bad, hopefully should get it Monday or Tuesday as the item is in stock. :)

Due today between 10:16-11:16. :) But I'm off into uni now, looking forward to tonight. I've been getting on a fair bit in Deus Ex on just the integrated graphics and LOWEST settings. :p

I have no idea, I don't think I changed it from the default, whatever that is. I haven't been using that many guns. Mostly the pistol and shotgun. A silencer would be useful. :)

Don't have the social aug yet, I guess I'll get that too.

Barret was a pain in the arse. Took me nearly an hour to sort him out. :p

GPU has arrived and is at home waiting for me to install this evening. :)

Looks like a good build. I love how you used your budget very wisely. :) Reminds me of myself :D

EDIT:
What camera did you use to click the pictures? I love the shots :)

Thanks. It's a 40D with a fairly decent lens. They pics are ok, but when I get a decent case in the summer, I'll take some much better photos.

Silencer is available from the gun shop in the chinese brothel in Shanghai (and also from a shop in a flat in detroit- if you save the woman hostage on first level, her husband will tell where it is and how to get a discount:)

Yeah, I remember seeing it. I'll try to go back and get it. I'm in the TYM building at the moment. :D

Oh, and congratulations on the card again- I take it all settings at max run with no problems?

It got a little laggy at times with everything on max. I'm not sure what settings do what, or how to optimise everything on my machine for it to run games better. I think I turned off vsynch and post processing and it seems to run fine for the most part now.

I just thought, I let windows find and install the driver, maybe it's not the latest and greatest driver version? I'll have a look on AMD and get the latest and see if it helps.

Yeah, this Antec 300 is so crap. I now remembered I'm also going to have to remove the motherboard to put the cpu cooler on. -_-

Yeah, installed the latest AMD drivers, big difference. Everything now back on high and running very smoothly. Now in the Picus building and getting through nicely. Picked up a silencer from one of the newsroom drawers! I think my difficulty settings are on the next one up from easiest. It's fine for now and suits me atm.
