yeah, i think it would be better to get the asrock z68 pro3 as it has onboard graphics and can overclock your "K" cpu (its there if you ever want to try it).

So I don't actually need that expensive motherboard? There's no chance of me putting in 2 graphics card. And the retail processor would be much better, I agree. I need to collect this information together a bit better haha!

My plan is, indeed, to use the onboard graphics for a little while until I can afford a graphics card - having a working computer is much more important to me right now than playing games.

The laptop is balls, it won't turn on! It's only 2 years old. I don't think I can sell it on though so I don't know whether it's worth me paying for someone to fix it...I hate the laptop with a passion. The number of times is closely avoided being smashed...

OK sorry, must have missed something then. :(

@stulid Is the value RAM going to be as good? I don't mind paying a little more if it's going to be better.

Honestly, you wont tell the difference, ram speed and timings make little difference for Sandybridge performance, the reason everyone usually picks 1600 RAM is thats its usually only a tiny bit more than 1333mhz ram and it allows higher overclocks, but you can overclock the core of the 2500K cpu independent of the speed of the RAM.

So what you are saying is, if you buy a Sandybridge CPU which cant be overclocked ie. the non "K" version, then there is no point buying expensive RAMs and you might aswell save the £10 or so and buy a value RAM?

Basically, but usually at OCUK the corsair XMS3 1600 RAM is like £30 (sometimes less) so it just makes sense to get it, the Corsair Value RAM hasn't been £23.98 for a while (I think I remember it being £26'ish)

Yeah, go with that. I would keep the XMS3, as everyone uses it. Unless you are really strapped for cash.

If the £10 saving by getting the value RAM means you can get a slightly better graphics card then its worth doing,

A 5770 is £78, a 5830 is £95 for example.

A GTS450 is £100, but a GTX460 is £110.

That's true but I'm not looking to buy the GPU yet, I'll probably just spend the £10 for the sake of it.

Very annoyingly, I can no longer salvage a case so it looks like I'll have to add one to the bill.

personally, i would go for the zalman 9+, more features like, temp. display, fan controller and more fans.
however, i prefer the side window for the 430 over the zalman 9+.
but its your choice, your the one who has to look at it everyday :D

Have you looked at the Lancool Dragon Lord PC-K62 range, or the "cheaper" Fractal Design cases such as the Arc Mini/Midi, or even the CoolerMaster CM-690 II.

Im not trying to put you off the Fractal Design R3, I'm just trying to give you other options incase the threads posted by Stu do put you off.

EDIT: damn i need to type faster... if you want "no obvious features" you should give the Arc Mini/Midi a look.

The BitFenis Shinobi looks excellent! I know we geeks love all the lights and stuff that you generally have in a computer case but considering I'm likely to often leave it on all nightI don't want all the glaring lights.
