Building my first PC in screenshots

there are various screenshots with 24-pin not connected and screws missing from the motherboard. it's a bit hard to track what the op is doing wrong, but if it's happened twice he's probably doing something wrong!

Spoke to OC, don't know if it good news, but a lot of these boards have been returned, due to them not posting, so he said send it back and we will get it replaced.

Fingers Crossed:eek:

Now this time guys... Run him through this step by step.

It's the small things that we all take for granted that we fail to mention whilst building. Like regularly going to touch a radiator, handling components by the edges taking due care not to touch the PCB, power down the PC FULLY before doing any work by flicking the on off switch several times even though there is no power lead connected.ie discharge any residual charge etc etc etc

We all carped ourselves during the first build - Fortunately my first build, probably like most of yours didn't have a big massive HSF to contend with, so I think it's a lot more difficult doing a build now than it used to be. I have to admit that in the early days I've crushed a core. But don't be fooled as experienced builders can get it wrong too.

A couple of years back I was rushing around to test some components and must have fried the mobo.. which in turn fried several cpus and graphics cards as I started to swap out known working components - £500 down the pan - and I know what I'm doing but I was rushing

Last week again - working quickly/rushing without due care - quick swap out of the cpu, powered on a mobo noticed the cpu fan connecter was wrongly connected. No big deal I thought. WRONG ... dead mobo. Fortunately the rest of my components were safe.

Anyway please add to the list above - in the meantime someone please detain @otemu, father of 3 on suspicion for the murder of 2 motherboards.

Bail ? You've got to be kidding me, he's armed, he's dangerous - denied.

When you get your new motherboard, for the love of god put it on top of the motherboard box with paper to test it. Install RAM, CPU, heatsink and graphic card, plug in the 24-pin ATX connector (and possibly 4-pin power cable) and fire it up. If it posts, then power off and back on again - if it posts again, then you have a working setup.

Visually inspect all the stand offs on the motherboard are there, and that you don't have too many or not enough. If you think you can put a plastic stand off in the board to support it more, do that - a motherboard can never have enough support. ;)

Forgot hooking up the USB ports and panel lights/switches - just power it up in the case with RAM/graphic card/CPU & heatsink installed. Hopefully it will fire up if it does, have a coffee/beer then work on connecting up the USB ports and front panel.

At every stage test. Add harddrive...test. Add CD-ROM...test. If the worst happens and the PC dies, at least you have an idea what caused it.

sorry to say this but if it has been posted on an antistatic bag and therfore shorted out/fried because of this then i dont think you would be able to return it.

there is nothing wrong with the P6X58D-E

it is a fantastic baord with a very low return rate.

is that because you put the board on an AS bag and powered it up?
it would suggest to me that you have killed the board.

I've never had any problems doing that with my builds, I've must've done over a dozen builds over the years & they've been fine leaving them on the AS bag before putting them in the case. Guess I've been lucky, I wont next time.

RJK, what surface do you recommend building a PC on?

With my first build (current rig) I was planning on testing it outside of the case first but was too afraid to put power through it with all the components out in the open. Reading this now i'm glad that i was afraid... because I did have the MB sitting on an anti-static bag also...

It can be pretty hard to avoid things like static damage, but I hope you get your build all sorted soon, it will be a beast once it's finished :)

I'm confused why the op says he phoned OCUK and was told something completely different to what RJK said.

Because RJK saw the OP power it up on an anti-static bag which, as said, can kill the board.

I will go out on a limb and say that the OP DIDN'T say this on the phone to OCUK.

Anyway, I hope you get the mobo replaced again, and it works this time :P If they don't replace it you will be able to use the repaired mobo.

Theres no proof that he did power it up on the AS bag, the only pic there is the one where hes got the board on the bag because he said he was putting the heatsink on, other than that the wires are plugged in (which doesnt prove that it was switched on, on the bag) there is no actual proof?

I've never really understood why you shouldn't. Done it more times than I care to remember, with no problems.

Because antistatic bags have metal in them, they act as sort of a faraday cage any static charges get dispersed around the bag not the components inside.

Ok, he may not have actually tried to turn it on while it was on the AS bag, and I wasn't trying to criminalise him but trying to point out why RJK told him something different than OCUK. Sorry if I made him come out in a bad light.

I've never bothered with all that, I put everything in the case and test it there and luckily enough I never get problems!

Very interesting thread, my sympathy goes to the OP for his bad luck.

I've built only 2 PCs from scratch in my time and been lucky that both worked first time (got a third to build soon) as I didnt test them out of the case first.
