Building Oblivion

Sadly I've got it crashing :/ I got as far as the essentials - in other words just before the Unofficial Patches... I decided to run through the tutorial to see if everything was ok... crash to desktop not far in :/

How do I go about finding out what the cause is?

Perhaps I was despairing too soon : I restarted and got all of the way through the tutorial - it had crashed as soon as I'd gone through the broken wall very early in. No problems since then. I'd still like to know if there is anything I should be doing when/if it crashes to identify the cause.

Doesn't really deserve a sticky IMO, it's a 5 year old game.

The thing is with modding is that a game can be brand new again. :)

I think a sticky for modding Oblivion is warranted but not just for beautifying the game but also for the (much more important/needed ;) ) gameplay mods as well.

A sticky with tutorial threads in it would probably be more suitable for this sort of thing perhaps.
Downloaded all this last night and time to have a hellish time setting it up =D

It's rather time consuming, I've spent hours on it so far. Although I suspect if I was to have to repeat it, then it would be a lot faster. I can already see results though! I can't explain the earlier crash... since it crashed within a few minutes and I've played around for 30+ minutes it must be a one off.

A little gripe with the sites that support the game is the way they name files that I download! They could be better about that :)

It is very time consuming. Took me 2 nights to get it to work properly and to remove mods that I don't need or which cause problems.

In the end though its lovely, especially the first 2 sound mods (I only used the first 2). Makes the environment and enemy location so much nicer and helpful. :)

That's where I ran into problems before. I was trying to do all this myself and I ended up getting so bogged down with mods that I didn't get around to the game.

Time to restart the modding session... I got as far as Places... but I'm starting to want to not put in a lot of the mods, many of them from this point on look very optional indeed, and I think I'd be better making sure it works etc before adding mods that are more or less isolated from the rest of the game until later.

One mod I do need to find that's not here is some kind of solution to the awful levelling system in Oblivion. I don't like that a) It's based on skills and b) That everything levels along with me. I want areas that are difficult and areas that are easy... I'll need to find one of those to add to it.

Other than that.. it's back to the modding workshop for old Halk.

'Awful' is being extremely generous.

The most popular mods that change leveling are Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, Francescos Levelled Creatures/Items, Warcry and Tamreil Immersive Experience.

This thread explains how each of them treats leveling in Oblivion. Well worth reading as it'll help you get the type of game you want.

Thank you very much :)

sldsmkd - I have my own personal server. It has unlimited bandwidth and a 100 megabit connection, and plenty of space. If you think it would help then I don't mind hosting for you so that people can skip the adverts and clicks and hassles of downloading from other places. You could for example have everything mentioned here as an omod on the server, renamed the right way to make it easier for people and faster for them to do the build. The only issue would be getting the files up there, I can't give you FTP access, so we'd have to work out something if you were interested and felt it would help.

I've already downloaded everything myself, but for anyone else i'd imagine that would be a massive help if they didn't want to pay for premium, took yonks to get them all (even skipped some minimal ones as it ****ed me off so much.)

Well... there would be some advantages...

First of all it'd be less hassle to obtain the files.
Secondly they could all be put there as omods, saving any conversion.
Thirdly it'd be far quicker just to double click on a bunch of omods, and then add then and skip problems in the mod manager.
Fourth it would skip the need for git. Which I'm not too keen on at various stages of the modding process. It'd be up to people if they wanted to git at the start (right clicking and having winrar do it for me does the same job) and then the git once everything was properly done would be the best option.
Fifth it would hopefully mean loads more OcUKers using this patch set, which would lead to more exploration of any problems that occurred, and then solutions found.

Does sound fairly awesome.

I need to read the guide in depth, just downloaded everything and renamed it to suitable files when downloading.
Is there a guide on how to merge 3 files into one omod on the first post? Just saw it for a few mods i think, haven't had time to read it all through.

Going to start around 8 tonight modding it and hopefully playing before 12 =P

The three files are just rar files part1.rar etc. Just remove the numbers that were added to it and it'll unrar to a single file.

Just spent all day following this guide through. All I can say, really, is wow! This is an absolutely excellent resource and, whilst it's been time-consuming, the end-result is nothing short of breathtaking. Thank you for posting it. :)

Also, very good call using Git to manage all the changes. Not something I would have thought of and I use Git a lot! :p

Here's a handy tip : It's easy to mess up a OMOD creation and have the folders nested. The result of this is when you activate the OMOD then it'l put the files in data/data/whatever rather than data/whatever.

There's an easy way to check for this - Look in /oblivion/data and see if there is a data folder there, if there is then you messed up. Look inside it to work out what mod might have put the files there. Deactivate the mod you think is responsible, and if you were right then some or all of the files will vanish. if it's only some then you messed up more than once. Delete the guilty OMOD and recreate it. Also delete the data/data folder once it's empty, that way if it appears again you know why.

Unfortunately they aren't my files to distribute. The authors put them on tesnexus / where-ever and that's where they should stay imo.

Once you have the OMODs it's a lot quicker, takes me an hour to install it all from scratch :)

Anyone done any before and after screenies as they've been working through this? I'm at the texture packs currently and taking a few, might upload some later, would be interested to see others if you post them here or high res screenie thread.

Better Cities 4.9.2 by Banasplit & Friends

And finally, the big daddy. Better Cities. This replaces every city (except Kvatch) in the game, upping the polycount, the detail - everything.

Download the 3 files from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513 and make separate OMODs from the archives for each of them. Once that is done they need to be installed in a certain order.

Better Cities
Better Cities Permanent Resources
Better Cities Resources

When installing Better Cities. Yes to merged plugins. Select Clocks of Cyrodiil. Yes to FPS Patches. Yes to Better Cities View When Distant. Don't remove the flood (it looks better). Yes to Open Cities (i'm still checking this, it's a new option). Disable ClocksOfCyrodiil.esp (just the esp in the left pane).

Quit OBMM. Run BOSS. DEFINATELY run Bash and make a new Bashed Patch. Run TES4LodGen. Test the game. Save to Git if everything is fine.

I installed it like you asked but never was asked of 'merging plugins' or 'clocks of cyrodiil' etc.

My city looks like this and i can't even figure out if its different =P

I think i may have done this. I would certainly put this in the Original post :(
