*******C.A.R.S - Community Assisted Race Sim*********

As good as it is I still think it will get slaughtered on Release for the **** poor Gamepad Control it still suffers from, it's great with a Wheel but I can't believe how they've just hardly tried getting the Gamepad sorted out, other 'Sim' Racing Games have managed it.

Yeah, a Gamepad will never be as good as a Wheel unless you're some kind of alien but Project CARS hasn't even seemed to have tried making it OK with a Gamepad. I really hope I'm wrong (As I stand to make cash if it does well.. :p) but I really can't see it.

Considering that consoles will be a major chunk of their sales I find it hard to believe. Still if it's true then what have the testers and community been doing for the past few years?

P.S Even on Assetto Corsa gameplad controls are crap and you can't even navigate through the menus.

I was actually surprised how good the Gamepad control is in the latest builds. Last time I tried it with a pad was about 64 months ago and it was awful. Stick it in Mode2 now and it feels just like I would expect from a pad controlled racer.

I like the fact there are 3 different modes to choose from , just hope it doesn't get overlooked and defaults to 1 as that is a bit of a twitch fest for me , way to sensitive. Could give the wrong impression if you arnt aware of the different modes.

What build you playing?

Gamepad control is the best in a "Sim" I have seen for a LONG time.

Takes time to master (That is how every game should be).

I find this odd as I thought the game ran on a modified version of their Shift 2 Unleashed game engine. I've played plenty of hours on S2U both with pad and wheel but never found playing with a pad was poor. The control is different as you twitch more with the stick rather than turning the wheel. With all the assists off, S2U is quite 'sim' like and not arcadey.

I think I can easily sum the Gamepad problem with ProjectCARS up very simply.

Last night I bought DiRT Rally. Around 3 Mins after it had finished downloading I had set my graphics up, I then jumped straight into the game, I controlled the car with my XBox 360 PC Gamepad with no assists and it felt good, I hadn't even mapped the controller or set anything, it just worked. It also worked just dandy on the next 4 or 5 cars I tried on different tracks. I still haven't adjusted it.

On ProjectCARS I still, after Months and Months and over 100+ Hrs of Gameplay since it went on STEAM, after trying probably hundreds of different settings, tweaks and game-modes still CAN'T get the gamepad set up properly for *EVERY* car/track. Yeah I can get it working great on X Car, but if I then try driving A,B,C Cars I need to CHANGE EVERYTHING....

'It's not broken and works perfectly if you...' Derp! If it needs something doing to it, to get it 'right'. It's broken, not working correctly. If it needs constant adjustment it's not 'fine'.

Like I said, ProjectCARS IS an awesome Game, I PERSONALLY think that the flaws with the Gamepad will be it's undoing. If you think the Gamepads fine in ProjectCARS then hey, great! I don't know what to tell you, for others it's not.

How is this game running on amd cards now played a old build some time ago and have to say it wasn't very good and the fact there was nvidia billboards all over the place wasn't holding up much hope on my rig so I've held off pre order

ATI performance is much better now.

@doofer - Have you tried the Mode 2/3 yet? I'm not going to lie its different to Forza/GT with a pad but I don't find it undrivable.

Given the level of simulation compared to the aforementioned games - I think they've done a very good job of getting it to work on the pad. Running with assists definitely makes it more manageable but ultimately the full sim setting will work best with a wheel.

The thing which worries me is the longevity for the more casual crowd. With no grinding career or 'special' events I don't think the masses will find much in terms of replay value. A free car a month really doesn't add an awful lot more gameplay.

There will be community events some of which may well have prizes etc.
During the career you can get invited to special races.
As far as the grinding goes start at the bottom and work your way up how is that any different, be they a casual player or an avid sim/race fan?

There is loads more than just the one free car a month coming to project cars, all of which will be announced SMS at some point.

I agree.

Any racing game which is fully playable with a pad is not a "Sim".

To make the pad work, sacrifices need to be made to the core system, thus breaking the "Sim".

Like for most games PC exclusives, using a pad is a compromise, likewise for a true racing simulation, a game pad is a compromise to Wheel/pedals which offer the ultimate experience.

I don't see many giveaways happening to be honest. The special events are basically just events outside of your chosen career path. Not special reward to unlock.

I understand they went for the 'everything unlocked' approach, which is fine for me but I think a game without more goals beyond the career mode might fizzle away quickly for Joe Average.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy the game but as with any game I do have doubts about longevity. It's really up to the community to keep it popular.

Certainly the 'collect em all' nature of its console rivals is missing , and indeed that may have missed that market from a major sales point of view, but it is offering the PC crowd what they are effectively used to/want. There is also an undeserved console market for the more simmy end of the racing genre who will still 'get it'.....

Whats the deal with backers getting money when game makes profit? Not expecting a whole lot if anything at all just wondering if there's something we need to set up/do
So we don't miss out.

Played and.tested few different builds last year and was very impressed.
Added to.steam last month... Might jump in soon.
When wI'll.final version release?

There are some pre-reqs listed on the WMD portal ( top of the page on a yellow banner iirc), probably best checking on the forums there. Basic stuff like checking you paypal is setup and listed in your profile.

I'm looking forward to the 'everything unlocked' feature. I still play a lot of Shift 2 and hated grinding by playing career races in cars I didn't like on tracks I didn't like. Thankfully a mod to unlock all is available and I still haven't got bored playing my favourite tracks over and over again. I just make the AI difficulty more challenging and push hard to beat my previous finish position.
