maybe racing is not for me? I've been practicing all week on Silverstone, setting the Ai to 40%, and only come about the middle of a 20 car pack (driving the Clio Cup). I find it veyr hard to be consistent, say every 10 laps I spin out once.

It's easy if you have a wheel and pedals.

some cars slower is faster your probably trying to go too fast into corners and steering to hard so the front wheels just slide forward instead of turning the car

you can't use much braking force whilst actually turning either or you unbalance the car, same with throttle.

you should be using the throttle to keep the car balanced in corners ad not have sudden weight transference.

in some high powered cars like in real life full throttle puts a twisting force on the chassis and tries to pull you to one side

donnington park is probably the easiest track to learn since most corners are virtually identical

grab a car and try to enter the corners at these speeds

then try to get a bit faster each time.

do it in time trial with ghost laps turned on

you do understand racing lines and apexs to straighten out a corner?

You just need to know how late you can brake and still turn into the corner and hit your apex once you learn this on each track it doesn't take more than a lap or two to get good at a circuit in each car.

also what camera do you use? bonnet cam is probably the easiest to be fast with.

if your using the 3rd person camera view then you will never be quick

Don't worry about it, it's supposed to be brutal, once it 'Clicks' it 'Clicks'. The Clio isn't the best Car to learn on as it's kind of an awkward FWD Race-Car that will bite you very easily if you push it too hard. Keep concentrating on consistency as consistency is the key to faster times, learning the Tracks will help you out loads, Time Trials are a great way to learn the Tracks as there's no pressure and you don't get 'tricked' in to taking the AI Lines, the AI cheat, they have better grip than you, but they brake a lot earlier and then go faster around every corner, they can also cut corners and go on grass/gravel-traps without losing any speed, you can't do this, same as if it rains, they don't slow down at all, but you do...

In Time Trials you can Download Ghosts to see how others drive, just remember that some might be running really good set-up's which will be impossible to keep up with in Default Set Up, but just playing against your own Ghost will gradually improve things as you will 'See' your own mistakes coming up and will get faster and faster.

Welcome to the "I suck" racing team :)

There is no shame in finishing last if that is the best you can do.

Each time you race that car on that track, you will improve.

I cannot tell you it will be fun, that is upto you to decide but if you enjoy it, keep playing, do not just stop because you cannot "Win".

The thing with racing games such as this is that you have to learn the art of racing, that is not to sound patronising but it is true and that curve can be steep.

One thing I would like to see here if there is enough of us is individual multiplayer races based on ability, maybe even a few leagues if people would find it fun.

So those who suck, i.e me, can enjoy a race against other suckees, those who are more established can race against others who are at their pace. Not all the time though as getting a butt whupping every now and then builds character - lol.

Also, always remember, your racing the car in front and behind what ever your position is on track, its great fun, i have had some of my best races ever at the back of the field.

Thats made me feel better about my performance :) cheers!

What cars would you guys suggest as good starting points to get to grips with the game! Did a bit of the karting stuff but want to move on to proper cars tbh! Can i quit a series in the career and try another or do i just start a new game?

Other than that been messing about in solo races and free practice

Must vent my frustration somewhere! The reverse grid in race 2 on the single seaters is absolute pants. It's just impossible to follow the cars closely enough to pass them, as they are so slow through some of the corners. This is at Suzuka. 2 laps to make up 15 places is just ridiculous.

I must have restarted it 20 times and I can't get anything close to a clean first lap. They also pile into the back of you, and swipe your back wheel with their front wheel. So now I'm probably going to have to just race it and settle for 10th out of 16 all because the AI is so poor.

Some good advice above. Try the radical car it has good visibility from the cockpit and is very forgiving. Start with the slower version first and go from there. Or alternatively practice in the gt3 cars the mclaren and audi are forgiving and easy to learn.

just start a new career.

maybe try the open wheelers they start nice and slow and have a fair amount of grip.
the ones without rear spoilers maybe not so much.

some of the normal cars are a bit of a handful

turn the percent of race distance up then I doubt they do 2 laps in rl and if ai is to slow in corners your probably at a to easy difficulty

Are you 100% sure race 2 is reverse grid? I've not had that myself yet, but I have had race 2 being 2nd fastest qualifying lap.

Why are you Racing for just 2 Laps? Increase the Lap Count, it's where you can also lower/increase the AI Skill, two sliders. If you're right at the back then you really need a minimum of 5 laps to get through to the front (Safely ;)) or just 0% the AI and try and avoid them all on the first lap :p

I'm just going on what the default is. I had no idea the number of laps was editable! Done that now, cheers guys.

I qualified on pole, and won race 1, so as I started at the back of the grid in race 2 I assumed it was reverse grid. Oh well. I'm trying now with 5 laps.

I still maintain that there is something wrong with the AI. They are able get up to speed a lot faster than my car will, even when they've taken a corner slowly. They don't react to a car being present beside them either. They just have a crash.

Have a formula rookie race on the Suzuka short circuit for 5 laps with an AI setting you are comfortable with. It's still very, very difficult to pass cars that are far slower than yourself. Particularly the very last corner. They slow down a lot for it which means you have to slam on the brakes mid-turn to avoid a collision. That usually ends up in a spin :( Then all of a sudden they have shot off out of the corner as if they've taken it at a much higher speed. I appreciate some people will say I need to get better, but there is something wrong with the way they pick up speed out of corners.

Thanks for the tips :) I have a Fanatec CSR wheel and clubsport pedals. I dont feel they are particulalry good so I might get a Simsteering system.

Slightly off topic, is it worth trying iracing (and staying in the rookie class) or should I get plenty more experience offline first?

Anyone playing this with a 360 controller - thoughts?

Bit of discussion on the last page or 2, i was wondering the same and just went and picked it up

Im using a ps4 controller but its recognised as a 360 pad. So far so good, using default settings and its been good!

Its the driving itself that needs patience, slow before corners accelerate on the way out or after and it plays well! If its played like a arcade racer you spin easily :D
