can smoke go through walls?

To answer your question about how its passing through the walls it might not be passing thought the walls. although it could be at a guess the most likely places would be at the bottom of the walls or below you're floor boards and in the ceilings.

It could be that you have some nasty internal cracks/opens in the walls within and the smoke isn't passing through but seeping in.

What type of house do you live in? does it have shared floor boards or supporting beams that pass through the house?

The smoke could be going though the floor and in to the other house.

The smoke could be going in to the celling and traveling into the roof and back down again.

Windows how close are they to each other and are there any chance it could be travelling from the windows, gaps around them etc.

Do you have any noticeable draft in the house?

Thing is it could be any number of things and you could look to try and stop it but the effort that could be involved to do that wouldn't be worth just not smoking in that room.

GF sometimes smokes on our balcony, when I am sleeping in the next door room, even with the windows closed shut, I can smell the smoke.

Sounds like it's probably going through the air filter and onto next door. Smoking in the house is pretty disgusting :S It lingers for days and gets on all your clothes, furniture etc.

There's lots of ways for the smoke to travel next door. It doesn't just go up, it will travel with the air flow. How old is the house? It's not uncommon for older houses for the first floor beam supports to continue right through the party wall. Or the party wall parged render in the loft space to have fallen away in places, that's assuming it's not a shared roof void (with firewall). Could be a poorly seal cavity wall, or maybe your neighbor has a device like a gas fire or back boiler creating a mild negative pressure from inadequate ventilation, so drawing air in where it can. If your houses have significantly different temperatures that could cause a convection current sucking air through any gaps in the building fabric. But then it doesn't take a lot for a non smoker to register cigarette smoke, so guessing it's more like the 'smell' than actual dense second hand smoke.

Not really, my blood pressure was ridiculously high the entire time I gave up smoking. I started again and my blood pressure shot down to normal levels again.

It's not "hey, he's rationalising" my body physically changed to a healthier state when I started smoking again.

I gave up for health reasons, not because I didn't enjoy it, it seemed counter intuitive to give up for health reasons if m health then deteriorates.

So lung cancer and other smoke related cancers would be better than high blood pressure.

Why not take tables to lower blood pressure.

I fail to believe there wasn't another lifestyle factor you could have changed to lower your blood pressure rather than taking smoking up again.
There's two options there, quit job or stop resisting the urges and go on violent murderous rampage killing everyone in sight.

I'm not taking pills to lower my blood pressure, even though I smoke I'm healthier than most, I exercise and eat right but my job is stressful as ****, I figure a little drinking, smoking and recreational use of hallucinogens is allowed.

I smoke 3 a day unless I'm drinking, blood pressure medication is likely to do more damage and it's not even pleasurable.

You know those stories where someone dies and no-one notices until the neighbours smell the decomposing body?

The smoke permeates through the wall in much the same way.

this

it wont be smoke but will be the smell of smoke

it has to go somewhere... and if your windows are shut it will choose the easiest way out , ceiling , then walls .

if i smoke in the garage (and its the same with other aerosols such as spray paint ) the rooms next to it will be ok but above it will stink

Get a load of air freshner and spray loads in the area he is saying it is coming from. If he cant tell what scent it is then its either likely that he is full of bs or that someone (Girl next door) is using you as a scapegoat. If he can then it may be another issue.

im a fair person ...had a problem with them in past cause my dog had barked cause someone was in our back gardens ...if it is possible for it to happen like there saying i was thinking of redecorating bedrooms and swapping with my son but i dont feel i should have to do this as its my own home, very frustrating in one way i want to tell them to **** off and in another id never want to put there or any one kids health at risk

how about your own?

Smoking will give high blood pressure.
And the best way to release stress is sex. :p

But at the end of the day its your body, so enjoy

It is possible. I used to get it in my last house. (Neighbours smoked heavily.) Air, odours, smoke, can find a way through adjoining walls. Chimneys, air bricks, windows (opened/closed), floor spaces, loft spaces, there are pathways. It won't be common (hence some people saying it's impossible) and probably depends a lot on the concentration of the smell in question, but it can happen.

Put it this way, if you're having a proper full smoke test of your chimney (you have an open fire) they should check for smoke next door as well as in your own house. Why would they do that if nothing can ever get through?
